UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES E. ALLEN AND PATRICK F. DUFFY, OF GREENSBOROUGH, N. G.
IMPROVEMENT IN BRlCK-MOLDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 213,371, dated March 18, 1879; application filed January 18, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that we, JAMES EDWARD ALLEN and PATRICK FRANCIS DUFFY, of the city of Greensborough, in the county of Guilford and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Brick-Molds; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a top plan of our brick-mold, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same through lines a- 00.
Our invention relates to an adjustable mold for brick, said mold having a non-adhesive surface; and the novelty consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claim.
In carrying out our invention we employ two standards having feet or bearing-surfaces upon each extremity sufficient to insure a firm standing, which standards are connected above by a horizontal cross-bar, to which are secured, in any suitable manner, adjustable arms, which arms, at their other extremity, are rigid with a plate having a cloth, felt, or other similar inner surface. This plate forms the upper part. of the mold when in use, and the felt-surface is to prevent the adhesion of the material, be it clay or other material.
A quadrilateral mold is provided of proper dimensions to allow the plate to'operate freely therein, and the standards act as guides thereto. Arms are provided to the mold, by which the same may be elevated to leave the brick upon the ground or yard.
An important feature of our invention is the felt surface to prevent adhesion of the clay, 850.; and the same may be applied to the press-plunger, if desired.
In operation our mold is placed with the bottom side up and filled with clay in any ordinary manner. It is then struck off and reversed. The green brick is deposited upon the yard, and by the handles the mold is raised, the felt-plate holding the brick down until it is entirely released from the mold.
The vertical arms which support the plate are adjustable, allowing any desired thickness of brick to be made, as is obvious.
Referring to the drawings,A represents the end standards, having feet a. and a rigid crossbar, A, to which are adj ustably connected vertical arms B, to which is rigidly connect-ed a plate, B, having a cloth or felt surface, I), as shown.
0 represents the mold, having elongated sides at c, which embrace the standards A, and it is provided with handles 0, as shown.
From the foregoing description the operation of our invention is obvious.
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the mold O 0, having handles 0, with the standards A a, cross-bar A, adjustable arms B, and plate B, having felt surface b, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that we claim the above we have hereunto subscribed our names in the presence of two witnesses.
JAMES EDWARD ALLEN. PATRICK FRANCIS DUFFY.
