Beit known that I, SAMUEL MAGFEREAN, of the city and` county of Philadelphia, andl State of.Penn

Sylvania, have invented'a new and. useful Improvement in Seats for Parks, Gardens, Sto.; and `I do hereby 'declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had tothe ac-v companying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon. y A n The nature of my invention consists of a seat made wholly, or the principal'part, of clay, `in the usual manner of manufacturing.terra-cotta ware.

Theobject of the invention is the production of ay seat of a durable nature at a cheap rate, and which may be made of handsome appearance at a triiing additional expense, as will be seen by the following In the `accompanying drawings,- whichy make a part oftthis speeication'- I Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved seat.

Figure 2-is avertical section of thesame.'v ,Like letters in bothgures indicate the same parts. A is a clay pipe, which I make of sufcient length to be sunk inthe ground a proper distance to insure permanency, and to project aboveethe same a suitable height fora seat;` v

I enlarge the upper end of the pipe to any desired size, andprovide itwith arebate, a, for the 'receptionof the Wooden seat "B, which I-secure by means of screws b, which pass through the lip c of the rebate. The seat B is provided' with a back, G, which is supported by means of the bent bar D, to which it is screwed or riveted, as seen in fig. l', the endsV of the bar being bronghtfbeneath the seat and confined by .means of screws e.l

When very cheap seats are,` wanted, they may be made without the back C; and if desired, the seat B may be made of the same material as the pipe A, in

a separatepiece, or the two parts maybe made in one piece, if preferred.

l tAny variety of form and ornamentation may be given to the seat B or pipe A, by the use of suitable moulds. And the part B may be connected with the part A in any convenient manner.

l`What I claim las my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A seat, having parts A B, constructed of terra-cotta Aor terracotta and wood combined, substantially in the manner above ldescribed, and for the purpose specified. In testimony that the above is my invention, I have hereunto set my hand and aixed my seal, this A3d day ,of April, A; D. 1869.
