Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 59,181, dated October 30, 1866.

To all whom 'it may concern V Be it known that I, ASA L. CARRIER, of Washington city, in the county of Washington, and iu the District of Columbia, have invented a new and useful Instrument for SupportingTools when not iu use; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference thereon marked, making a part of this specification.

The object of my invention is to meet that want, experienced in every workinghour by all mechanics, which 4is caused by not having some suitable means to keep the tools in place and order when not in use. I supply the means to fully meet this want by constructing a disk with au opening` from its circumference inward to a sufficient distance to admit a tool, a rim around its circumference to brace the tool to be supported; also a spike attached on the side opposite to the rim andthe mouth ofthe opening.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will describe its construction and operation.

In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of several of the tool-holders ready for use; Fig. 2, a side elevation of the holder, showing its manner of construction.

In Fig. l, A is the spike, made of any suitable length and thickness, and is cast in connection with disk B, which is cast of a suitable thickness and area to support and conform in shape to the end of the handle of the tool to be supported; There is an openin g in this disk of sufficient length and breadth to admit the tool for which the disk was calculated in constructing it.

C is the rim or band on the circumference of the disk, which is raised to a heightsufticient to hold or brace the tool, being supported in an upright position.

The holder is cast in one entire piece. When the holder is to be used, the spike'is simply driven into the substance which is to support the holder. Sometimes the holder has to be attached to a piece of hard wood, and if a spike should be driven in, the wood might be split or the spike bent. To obviate this difficulty a screw (see a, Fio. 2) is substituted for the spike.

Instead of casting rim C in one continuous piece, it may be east in several distinct pieces or spikes, and yet hold the tool in an upright position. v

In manufacturing, this construction would be of great importance, because of its economical expenditure of materials.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The slotted disk B, rim C, and spike or screw A, when constructed, arrau ged, and used in the mode described, so as to constitute a new article of manufacture, for the purpose specified.
