TROUSERS ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 18, 1915..
Application filed February 7, 1914. Serial N 0. 317,244.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JAMES J. CARNEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Havel-hill, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trousers Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in trousers and resides in the provision of an attachment therefor which will prevent bagging of the knees of the trousers when the wearer sits down.
An important object of my invention is to provide an attachment of the character described which consists of a fabric body portion that is secured by elastic straps or bands to the trous rs in such a way that the wearer in sitting down forces his knee into engagement with the body portion thus causing the bands or straps to pull the cloth of the trousers underneath the knee upwardly and permit suliicient room to enable the wearer to bend his knees freely thus preventing bagging of the trousers.
Another important object of my invention is to provide an attachment of the character described which is simple, cheap to manufacture, capable of being readily attached to trousers, and reliable and efficient in its operation.
The above and additional objects are accomplished by such means as are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, described in the following specification and then more particularly pointed out in the claims which are appended hereto and form a part of this application.
With reference to the drawings, wherein l have illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention as it is reduced to practice, and throughout the several views of which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts, Figure 1 is a View showing a pair of trousers having my attachment secured thereto, Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view showing my device attached to one of the legs of a pair of trousers, Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the device detached, and Fig. 4 is a top plan view of a slightly modified form of my attachment showing it detached.
Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, the numerals 1 and 2 designate the legs of a pair of trousers while in Fig. 1 the numeral 3 designates my attachment.
My attachment consists of a preferably oval body portion 4 formed of some suitable flexible fabric. Secured upon the body portion 4 is a pair of suitably elastic securing straps or bands 5 and 6. The straps 5 and 6 are placed one upon the other on one side of the body portion t and are secured centrally of their ends to the body portion 4: by suitable stitching as at 7. The ends of each strap or band extend beyond the periphery of the body portion 4 and are enlarged as at 8 and provided with suitable fastening means 9 arranged to cooperate with suitable fastening means 10 that are secured in the proper position adjacent to the knees interiorly of the legs 1 and 2 of the trousers.
A modified form illustrated in Fig. 4: consists of an oval body portion 11 formed of the same material as the body portion in the preferred form and provided with a pair of cross elastic straps or bands 12 and 13. These bands may be secured centrally of their ends by suitable stitching as in the preferred form and inserted through slits 14: that are formed upon the sides and ends of the body portion 11. The bands 12 and 13 extend beyond the periphery of the body portion 11 as at 15 and are provided with suitable fastening means 16 upon their ends. These extended portions 15 or ends of the bands 12 and 13 are the same size and shape as the body portion of the band instead of being enlarged as in the preferred form. The fastening means 16 in the modified form are arranged to cooperate with a fastening element of some suitable character that is to be secured in any suitable manner inte riorly of the legs 1 and 2 of the trousers adjacent to the knees thereof.
In securing the attachment in either the modified or preferred form, the straps 5 and 12 as the case may be are secured preferably longitudinally with respect to the trouser legs 1 and 2 adjacent to the forward creased portion thereof in such a way that slack is permitted the band. The bands 6 and 13 as the case may be are secured taut to the sides of the trouser legs 1 and 2 adjacent to the rear thereof. The body portion 4 is as will thus be seen spaced from the front creased portion of the trouser legs 1 and 2. l/Vhen the wearer sits down his knees come into contact with the body portion and cause the bands to exert a pull longitudinally and transversely, thus the cloth under the knee of the wearer is pulled upwardly to such an extent that the front creased part of the trousers does not come into contact with the knee, thus preventing bagging. It will be readily seen that the securing of the body portion of the attachment in such a way that it is spaced from the forward part of the knee portions of the trouser legs will permit the free knee bend ing action of the wearer and prevent contact of the knee with the trousers, thus eliminating bagging thereof. 1 I
ln reductionto practice, I have found that the form of my invention, illustrated-in the drawings aridreferred to in the above description, as the preferred embodiment, is the most efliclent and practical; yetre'ahzing that the condltions concurrent with the adoption of my device will necessarily vary,
I desire to emphasize the fact that various minor changes in details offconstruction, proportion and arrangement of parts'lnay' Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents.
straight across the leg in a vertical plane spaced from the forward knee portion of the trouser leg, the inturned portion of the straps being secured to each other.
2. The conibination'with a trouser leg of a shape retaining device including an elastic strip secured at its ends, vertically and interiorly of the forward knee portion of the trouser'leg, the ends being spaced a distance less than the length of the strip and a second elastic strip secured transversely at its ends to the trouser leg to eXtend straight across the leg in a' vertical plane spacedfrom the forward knee portion of the trouser leg, the intermediate portion of the strips sec'ured to each other;
3'; The combination with a trouserleg of a shape retaining device 1nolud1ng an oval shaped body portion, said body portion pro-I vided with elongated slits near the edges thereof, a verticalelastic strip adapted to 1 extend through the upper and lower slits of saidbody' portion, a horizontal elastic strip adapted to extend through slits onthe sides of the body portion and" between the vertical elastic strip and body portion for1ning a reinforcement in the center of said body portion, means for securing the free ends of said elasticstrips to the trousers.
In testimony whereof I affixmy signature in presence of twowitnesses.
