GARTER.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 30, 1914.
i Be it known that I, Lnwrs LEWIS macx sum; or cotnmrus, MISSISSIPPI. Y

Sp ecificatio'nof Letters Patent.
Annlication filed September 30, 1914. Serial .No; 864,337. 1
.To all whom it may concern a citizen of the United States, residing at 'Columbus, "in the county of Lowndes and hose for supporting the same.
' f important object of the invention. is to' provide a garter of the above mentioned character, which will'lie flat in use, and conveniently enga e the knee of the wearer. I
A further ob] ect of the invention'is to provide a garter of'the above mentioned character, which is-simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, strong and durable.
. Otherobjects and advantages of-the invention will be apparent during the course of straps 11,
the following description.
."In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals 'areemployed to designate likeparts throughout the same, Figure 1 isa side elevation of 1a garter embodying my invention, and Fig.2 is an'edge elevation of the same. I
Myjmproved garter comprises a knee. band 5, preferably formed of three-plies of fabric or cloth, attached or sewed together at their edges, as shown at 6. This knee band. preferably tapers toward its ends, as, shown. As above stated,-the knee-band consists of three plies of fabric, comprising an inner strip of cloth which is soft and will not irritate the skin. Upon the outer side of the inner strip of cloth there is a strip of cloth suchas' silk, satin or the like, having an attractive appearance and which will wear-well. Between the inner and outer 7 strips is arranged a'strip of reinforcing'or stiffening cloth, which imparts to the band the. desired stilfness and strength.
Depending from the lmee-band 5 are while; the strap 12 is arranged at a point substantially equidistantly spaced from such ends. The inner strap 12 is preferably sub- J stantially longer than the straps 11 and 13.
- 'Eacliof these straps 11,- 12 and 13 has its -upper endsecured' to a loop 14, attached to the k 1 1 ee-band 5 by a short strap 15., The
which the following is I 12 and 13. The straps l1 and 13 are attached to-the ends of the lmee-band Patented Jan; 4,
. upperend of the stra'p'is passed through the MACK SPANN,
loop 14 and bent outwardly upon itself'for attachment to a buckle 16, longitudinally ad ustably mounted upon the body portion of the strap, whereby the length of the strap may be varied ,as desired; Secured. tothe' lower end of the .strap is a stud-element 17 adapted to cooperate with a clasp "element 18, secured to the outer side of the strap by a short section 19, as shown. It is to be understood that the strap may be formed of elastic material or webbing or any othersuitabl material. v
Arranged above the knee-band 5' and secured to its ends are clampsdesignated as'a -whole by the'numerals 20 and 21. These clamps embodystud Jand clasp elements 22 and 23, which are identical with the stud and clasp elements 1 7 and 18. Secured to the knee-band 5 at a point substantially equi-distantly spaced from its ends, is an upwardly extending buckle or clamp .24.
In use, the upper clamps 20, 21 and 24, are secured to the under garment for. suspending the garter, with the knee-band 5 arranged forwardly of 'and contacting with the lmee. The straps 11, 12 and 13, are secured to the hose or socks, the strap 12 being arranged forwardly and the straps 11 and 13 upon opposite sidesof the leg. The
function of having the strap. 12 longer than the other depending straps is that when thewearer is standing erect the socks arejwholly supported by the straps 11 and 13 while the.
strap 12 is slack. When the knee is bent, 1
'the slack is taken out of the long strap 12 and the sock is supported at the front as well as at the sides, thus preventing it from wrinkling. It is obvious that the knee-band also serves to protect the knees of the trousers from-perspiration or the like,
It is to be understood that the form of. my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a. preferred example of thesame, and that various changes in the shape,
joined claim. 1 a
Having thus described the invention, I claim:
A garter of the character described, comv prising a flexible band adapted to be arranged forwardly of the knee in a substantially horizontal ,positionwith 'itsopposlte ends extending upon opposite sides of the size, and arrangement of parts may beresorted to without departing from the splrit.
of the invention or the scope of the: subknee, means for attaching the band to an substantially greater length than the side 10 under garment for suspending said band, straps to extend downwardly beyond the side straps attached to the opposite ends of same for a substantial distance, and hose atthe band and depending therefrom and taching devices secured to the freeends of adapted to be arranged upon opposite sides the side and front straps.
of the leg, :1 front strap attached to the LEWIS MACK SPANN. band at a point substantially equidistantl-y' Witnesses spaced from the ends theieof and adapted to V. B. IMES,
