Description

y 1949. E. N. STANTON 2,471,910
APRON Filed April 23, 1947 INVENTOR.
Ernesf N. Stanton ATTORNEK Patented May 31, 1949 UNITED STATESPATENT OFFICE APRON Ernest N. Stanton, Grosse Ile, Mich.
Application April 23, 1947, Serial No. 743,310
2 Claims. (Cl. 2-52) This invention relates to wearing apparel, and has particular reference to aprons.
An object of the invention is the provision of an apron which has means arranged whereby the apron may be quickly attached to or removed from the body of a person.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of the character indicated, in which a spring wire is bent and rebent upon itself to form a comparatively wide flexible supporting medium arranged for quick insertion in the belt of the apron.
Another object of the invention is the provision of an apron which is constructed and arranged with a belt portion formed with a plurality of inverted pockets adapted to engage the loops of a preformed flexible insert.
Another object of the invention is the provision of an apron having a flexible tension member, whereby the apron may be quickly positioned about the waist of a person, and may be readily disassembled for laundering, storing, and the like.
Another object of the invention is the provision of an apron which is constructed and arranged in such manner as to eliminate snaps, strings, buttons, and other types of fasteners generally employed.
The foregoing and other objects and advantages of the invention will become more apparent as the description proceeds, reference being made from time to time to the accompanying drawings, formin part of the within disclosure, in which drawings:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a device embodying the invention shown in position on the body of a person.
Fig. 2 is a section taken substantially on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the spring insert shown in its normal, free, and unrestricted position.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary detail of a portion of the apron showing the inside of the belt, and the spring member ready for insertion in the pockets.
I am aware that aprons have been made employing a flat flexible spring member which may be inserted through a hem in the belt portion of the apron. This invention, however, contemplates the use of a spring wire member bent and rebent to form deep undulations, which member ficient length to substantially encircle the body indicates an apron having a belt portion 8 of sufof a wearer, and constructed as hereinafter described.
The belt portion 8 is constructed of an outside section 9 and an inside section I 0, the latter being secured together along their upper edges (Fig. 4) preferably by double stitching ll, or other suitable means. The outside section 9 of the belt portion 8 is secured to the apron i preferably by double stitching, as at [2. The lower edge E3 of the inside section ID is not secured to the apron.
The outside section 9 and the inside section ill .of the belt portion 8 are preferably double stitched together at either end, as at l4, and are double stitched together at spaced intervals, such as at ill, l6, l1, and I8 (Fig. 4), whereby a plurality of inverted pockets l9 and 20 are formed between the sections 9 and II), which pockets are adapted to accommodate the loops 2| of the spring wire insert 22.
I prefer to make the end pockets 2!] of such size that they will engage but one of the undulations 2! of the spring wire member 22, whereas the pockets I9 in the intermediate area of the belt may be large enough to accommodate two or more of the undulations.
Constructed in this manner, the spring wire member 22 may be inserted into the belt 8 from the under edge thereof, whereas the belt is actually suspended on to spring member 22, and the belt is held against longitudinal displacement with respect to the spring member 22 by reason of the fact that the undulations 2i engage the pockets [9 and 20.
I prefer to terminate the spring member 22 in a substantially square bend 23 (Fig. i) so that a tailored appearance may be given to the terminal ends of the belt 8 when the device is being worn.
With a device constructed and arranged as hereinabove described, the apron may be readily removed from the spring member 22 and vice versa when it is desired to launder the apron, or for other reasons.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the character described, including an apron, a belt secured to said apron, said belt having portions extending beyond the sides of said apron, said belt consisting of an outside member and an inside member, the latter being secured to said outside member along the upper and end marginal edges thereof and at spaced intervals positioned parallel to the ends thereof, to form a plurality of inverted pockets arranged 3 to accommodate the undulations of a spring wire insertable therein.
2. In a device of the character described, including an apron, a belt secured to said apron, said belt having sufiicient length to extend substantially about the body of a person, said belt consisting of an outside section which is secured to said apron and an inside section which is secured to' saidioutsi'de section thg tqia mar;
ginal edge and at-spaced intervals positioned at 10 797,890
right angles to said top marginal edge, whereby to form a plurality of inverted pockets adapted to accommodate the undulations of a spring wire member. 7 J
