invented certain new and useful Improvements in LingerieClasps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to devices for holding in place the shoulder straps of lingerie and other garments, to prevent them from slipping off the shoulders of the wearer, so that the neat appearance of the garments is preserved and the discomfort caused by displacement of the straps is avolded, and the wearer is saved the annoyance and embarrassment of being obliged to restore the shoulder straps to their proper position whenever they become displaced.

In accordance with the invention the shoulder straps, or preferably clasps adapted to receive the shoulder straps of the garments have associated with them pads of friction material which, when pressed against the shoulders by the tension of the straps, will retain the latter in proper position. The devices are of simple construction, inconspicuous in appearance, and the pads may be formed of inexpensive material, so that when they becomesoiled they may be replaced by fresh ones. The devices may take the form of clasps adapted to fasten together the shoulder straps of two or more undergarments, or the clasps may be designed to receive, or the pads may be attached directly to, the straps or ribbons of a single undergarment, such as a camisole, but in any event the pads will prevent the straps from slipping off the shoulders.

The particular nature of the invention, as well as other objects and advantages thereof, will appear more clearly from a description of certain preferred embodiments as shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 shows the devices in position upon the shoulders of a wearer; Fig. 2 shows a device constructed in accordance with the invention and having a metallic clasp; Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of the device of Fig. 2 in place upon the shoulder;

Fig. 4 is a plan view of a modified form of device; Fig. 5 is a side view of the device shown in Fig. 4; and Fig. 6 shows another form of the device.

In the form of device shown in Fig. 2, 10 represents a lingerie clasp of the usual construction, and the end 11 of which may be opened to permit the shoulder straps 12 of the garments to be placed in the clasp. Attached to the bottom of the clasp in any convenient manner, as by glue or by means of pins or rivets 13, is a friction pad 14 adapted to be held in frictional engagement with the shoulder when the device is in place with the straps of the garments passing through the clasp, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3.

The material I prefer to use for the fric tion pad is a soft sponge rubber, which has the desired effect of adhering to the skin of the wearer and does not bruise or discolor it, but it will be understood that other equivalent or similar material may be used for this purpose.

The device of Figs. 2 and 3 is particularly adapted for use in those cases where two clasps are worn on the front and back of each shoulder. In Figs. 4 and 5 I have shown a modification of the invention particularly designed for use where a single clasp is worn on each shoulder. In this modification of the invention the pad 14' has associated therewith a pair of clasps 16 adapted to fit over and hold in place the strap or ribbon 15 of the undergarment or undergarments. The clasps may be conveniently attached to the pad by having their ends bent inwardly as at 17 and rounded or pointed so that they may be forced into the material of the pad and held therein without the use of any extra fastening devices. When the device is to be attached to or removed from the ribbon, the ends of each clasp are sprung out of the pad, so that the clasps may be removed to permit the ribbon to be taken out or inserted as the case may be.

Fig. 6 of the drawing shows a modified form of the device in which the pad 14' is provided with a facing 20 attached thereto in any suitable manner and which may be of ornamental fabric to give the device an attractive appearance. The facing may serve to hold in place a clasp 21, or the clasp may be passed through the material of the pad. The device may be provided also with clasps 18, preferably passing through the pad and having inwardly bent ends 19 under which the straps of a garment may be caught, while the strap of a second garment may be placed in the clasp 21 and will thus be held over the strap of the firstgarment.

The arrangements of Figs. 4:, 5 and 6 provide pads which are of substantial length so that they will be bent to conform to the shoulder, and their holding effect will be greater than in the case of a pad of substantially the same width as the clasp, such as shown in Fig. 2. If desired, the friction pad may be fastened to the clasp by devices which may conveniently be removed or separated to permit the wearer to replace a.

soiled or worn pad. The clasps may be made of a transparent material, if desired, such as celluloid or the like, so that whenthe devices are in use, the clasps will be inconspicuous, and since the pads will be concealed beneath the straps the devices will not be readily apparent.

While I have shown and described certain preferred forms of devices embodying the 1 invention, it will be understood that the invention is not limited to these particular forms, as clasps of all kinds and other equivalent holding devices may be employed in connection with the pads for holding in place any desired number of garment straps.

When the devices are to be employed in connection with single straps the pads may be attached directly to the straps as by sewing,

snap fasteners, or in any other convenient manner. Other changes may also be made in the details of construction of the devlces without departing from the principle of the invention as defined in the appended claims.

I claim: 1. In a device of the character described,

the combination of a clasp adapted to be detachably associated with the strap of an undergarment, and a member formed of friction material associated with the clasp and adapted to engage the shoulder of the wearer to prevent the strap from slipping therefrom.

2. In a device for holding in place upon the shoulder of a wearer the strap of an undergarment, the combination of a friction member and. means associatedtherewith for connecting said member to the strap of the undergarment so that the strap will not slip off the shoulder, said means beingoperable to permit ready application of the friction member to the strap of the undergarment posed of friction material, apiece of fabric. of substantially the same size as the pad attached to the upper face of the pad, and a clasp held in place upon the pad by having the fabric passed therethrough and adapted to receivethe straps of theundergarments.
