Description

y 6, 1966 B. E. WILLIAMSON STIRRUP FOR GIRLS PANTS File g1l Sept. 10, 1964 INVENTOR, BEATRI CE E. WILLIAMSON M, Qibh w ATTO R N EYS 3,262,127 STIRRUP FUR GIRLS PANTS Beatrice E. Williamson, Leicester, Mass, assignor to M.K.M. Knitting Mills, Inc., Manchester, N.H., a corporation of New Hampshire Filed Sept. 10, 1964, Ser. No. 395,413 1 Claim. (Cl. 2232) This invention relates to improvements in attaching stirrups to stretch pants or the like for girls. It is an object of the invention to attach the stirrups in such a manner that distortion of the hems at the extremities of the legs of the garment will be avoided. There is usually substantial tension on the stirrups when the pants are being worn. If the stirrups are attached to the hems, as is customary, the hems are apt to be pulled out of shape, causing unsightly wrinkles in the lower end portions of the pant-legs.
According to the invention, the stirrups are provided with extensions which go well above the end hems and are secured to the vertical seams at points well above the end hems.
For a more complete understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following description thereof and to the drawing, of which FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of my improved stirrup;
FIGURE 2 is a fragmentary elevation of the stirrup and part of the pant leg to which it is attached, the pant leg being shown inside out; and
FIGURE 3 is a perspective view, on a smaller scale, of a pair of pants having stirrups attached thereto.
A pair of form-fitting stretch pants 10 is illustrated in FIGURE 3, a stirrup 12 being attached at the end of each pant-leg 14. Each pant-leg is composed of two panels which are joined by inner and outer side seams 16, 18, a portion of one such seam being illustrated in FIGURE 2. Each of these seams is made about half an inch from the edges of the panels which are joined thereby, the half-inch margins 20, 22 between the seam and the adjacent edges of the panels being doubled back against the panels to form the usual flat seams. At the end of each pant-leg, the fabric is turned in and up to form the customary end hem 24. FIGURE 2 is a fragmentary view of the inside of one of the pant-legs. The stirrup 12 consists of a strip of flexible material such as cloth the end portions of which are secured to the sides of the pant-leg, the mid portion of which extends in an open loop below the bottom edge of the pant-leg. This middle portion tapers slightly in width from the bottom States Patent edge of the pant-leg at each side thereof down to a minimum width at the lowermost point 30 of the loop. The stirrup is stitched to the upturned inner portion of the hem 24. These lines of stitching which are indicated at 32, 34 do not appear on the outside of the pants.
According to the invention, additional support is given to each end portion of the stirrup by a tongue 40 which is preferably integral with the rest of the stirrup and tapers upwardly in width to an extremity 42. Each of these extremities has the same width as the two margins 20, 22 of the corresponding flat seam 16 or 18 and is stitched thereto at 44 as indicated in FIGURE 2, thus relieving the lines 32, 34 of stitching of most of the stress resulting from the downward thrust of the feet of the wearer on the loops of the stirrups. This avoids unsightly distortion of the lower ends of the pant-legs when the garment is being worn and provides more secure anchorage for the end portions of the stirrups.
I claim:
In combination with a pant-leg comprising two panels, the free edges of said panels having narrow doublebacked margins, vertical side seams joining said doublebacked margins to form said pant leg, said pant-leg having an inturned hem at the lower end thereof, a U-shaped stirrup consisting of a flexible strip, stitch means permanently securing said flexible strip to said hem at both sides of said pant-leg, said stirrup having at each end thereof an integral tongue tapering upward to a width equal to that of the double-backed margins, stitch means extending transversely of said double-backed margins and said vertical seams permanently securing the end of each of said tongues to the double-backed margins at a point spaced substantially above said hem, whereby downward tension on the stirrup is taken largely by said doublebacked margins rather than the hems of said pant-leg.
