ALBERT PARADIS, 0F PHILADELPHIA, BENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO SAMUEL STERNBEBGER COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 29, 1913.
Application filed. April '7, 1911. Serial No. 619,493.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALBERT PARADIS, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Box, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of a paper or other box in which provision is made for controlling the goods or contents from shifting and so retaining them in good and marketable condition, the essential feature of the invention comprising a base piece or platform on which the goods are rested, and a cord for raising said piece and consequently forcing the goods tightly in contact with the-end of the box, the cord being adapted to have its ends united, thus also serving to retain the lid in closed condition on the body of the box, provision being made for covering and concealing the united ends of said cord while also serving to prove the intact condition of the box at its place of reception or delivery.
The invention is satisfactorily illustrated in the accompanying drawing, but the important instrumentalities thereof may be varied, and so it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific arrangement and organization shown and described.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a box embodying my invention. Fig. represents a horizontal section on line mm Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a transverse vertical section of a portion thereof on an enlarged scale. Fig. 4 represents a perspective view of a portion of Fig. 1 detached on an enlarged scale. Fig. 5 represents a top or plane View of another form of the invention.
, Similar letters of reference indicate c0rresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings: A designates a paper box, and B designates a lid therefor, said parts excepting the features of my invention applied thereto being of ordinary construction.
Within the box is the plate or platform G, on which the goods or contents of the box are rested. Under the bottom of said platform is the cord D, which is passed laterally therefrom and out of the body through the openings E in the sides of the latter,
one portion of said cord being run over the top of the 11d as at F, and then directed to the end of the other portion of the cord,
H to receive said knot, it being seen, as in Fig. 3, that the goods are held compactly and firmly against the underside of the lid and so prevented from shifting, whereby they may be transported compactly within the box, and so arrive at their destination in unimpaired and marketable condition, it being evident that the lid is held closed on the body by the cord D and not liable to be opened until the cord is severed or the knot G is opened.
Secured to the side of the lid is the seal J which is adapted to cover the knot G and opening H, so as to protect said knot from being undone while also concealing the same,-preventing exposure thereof and serving furthermore to indicate that the box is intact and has arrived at its destination without having been opened or its contentstampered-with. It will be noticed also that the opening or recess H receives and retains said knot therein, so that the latter does not bulge beyond the surface of the lid while the seal J covers said knot and recess, preserves comparatively the unbroken surface of the lid although the knot and recess exist behind the same.
In Fig. 5 I show the knot as of the cord made at the top of the lid instead of at the side thereof without, however, producing different results from that Where the knot is on the side as in the other figures, it being evident that said knot and the opening which permits the ends of the cord to be passed through the same, tightened and knotted are covered by a seal, the same as in Figs. 1, 3, and 5. When the lid is removed, the contents of the box are exposed and may be examined and removed without interference of the platform and without requiring to disturb said platform as the latter remains below the contents as most apparent on reference to Fig. 3.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A box composed of a body and lid,
openings in the sides of said body in combination with a movable contents supporting follower in said body, and a cord which passes through said body under said follower and freely supports the same, rising from the sides of said follower is extended upwardly therefrom and passed around said lid and having its ends adapted to be secured, the portion of the cord in the body being removed from and independent of the bottom of the body.
2. A box composed of a body and lid, openings in the sides of said body, and a recess' in said lid, in combination with a movable contents-supporting follower in said body, and a cord which passes through said body under said follower and freely supports the same, rises from the sides of said follower, is continued through said side openings, is extended upwardly therefrom and passed around said lid and has its ends meeting in said recess and secured therein, the portion of the cord in the body being removed from and independent of the bottom of the body.
3. A box composed of a body and lid, openings in the sides of said body, and a recess in said lid in combination with a movable contents-supporting follower in said body, a cord which passes through said body under said follower and freely supports the same, rises from the sides of said follower is continued through said side openings, is extended upwardly therefrom and passed around said lid and has its ends meeting in said recess and secured therein, the portion of the cord in the body being removed from and independent of the bottom of the body, and a pliable seal which is fixed to said lid over said recess and freely covering the secured ends of said cord.
