UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ARNOLD G. JAEGER, OF OMAHA, NEBRASKA.
LID-SUPPORTING DISPLAY-BOX FOR CIGARS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARNOLD G. Janeen, a citizen of the United States, residing at Omaha, in the county of Douglas and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lid-Supporting Display-Boxes for Cigars, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to lid-supporting display boxes for cigars, and has for its object the provision of means mounted upon a display box for automatically opening and closing the lid of the cigar box when the display box is opened or closed, and for providing a prop or support for these lids so that they may be held inclinedly when open.
It is a custom among retail dealers in the sale of certain grades of cigars to provide display boxes or small humidifiers usually called humidores for containing the cigars, the cigar boxes being seated therein, the display box is provided with a hinged lid and is slightly larger, usually, than an ordinary cigar box.
The invention has reference to means found convenient for opening, closing and for the support of the box lids during th necessary handling and display of the goods.
The invention consists of the novel combination and arrangement of parts, as described herein, pointed out by the claims and as illustrated in the drawing, it being understood that changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a display box with a cigar box seated therein, and showing lid-supporting devices embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a partly broken away end View of the display box, with a cigar box therein.
Referring now to the drawing for a more particular description, numeral 1 indicates a display box having a base or container 2 and a lid or cover 3 hinged at 4 upon the base. The plan of the base or containing part is preferably rectangular to conform to the shape of the cigar box 5 seated therein, and having a depth substantially the same as the depth of the cigar box.
I provide the recess or slot 6 incised in and opening upon the upper edge of the front wall 7 midway between the ends 8 of the base of the display box; and upon the front Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed. April 14, 1909.
Patented Aug. 3, 1909.
Serial No. 489,795.
terminal 13 is seated in recess 6, and is not obtrusive to prevent a complete closure of the display box.
The holder or transverse terminal of arm 12 is adapted to have a seating upon the lower side of lid 15, hinged at 16, upon the side wall 17 of cigar box 5, said cigar box being seated within the display box, and, as is apparent, when the display box is opened or closed the lid of the cigar box will, under operation of terminal 13, have corresponding movements, the arrangement thus described being very economical in cost and convenient in use.
I provide holding arms 18 disposed parallel with the front wall 9 of cover 3, and useful to insure a control of lid 15 in instances where the display box does not conform in width to the cigar box, the same being the terminals of the member or strand 19. Member 19 preferably comprises a con tact bar or portion 20 disposed parallel with, outwardly and rearwardly of the rear sidewall 21 of cover 3, and having a length substantially equal to that of the cover, and having transverse, parallel end-portions or supporting arms 22 mounted upon ends 10 of said cover and extended toward the front thereof to terminate in the holding arms 18 mentioned above, portion 20 being provided with the sleeve or roller 23.
Arms 18 are adapted to have seatings upon the under side of lid 15, of the cigar box, and may have seatings in recesses 24, said recesses being formed to open upon the upper edge of end walls 8 of base 2, and provided for he same purpose as recess 6. Member 19 may be secured upon the ends of cover 3 by staples 25, and when cover 3 is thrown backward it is held in a desired inclined position, sleeve or roller 23 adapted to rest upon and to make contact with the same support upon which the display box is seated, arms 22 supporting cover 3, described.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
1. In combination. with a first receptacle and a second receptacle seated therein, each of said receptacles having a hinged lid, of a supporting-arn'i mounted upon the lid of the first receptacle and having a transverse terminal disposed upon the inner surface of the lid of said second receptacle.
2. In combination with a first receptacle having a containing base and a lid hinged thereon, said base having a recess formed to open upon its upper edge, a second receptacle seat-ed within the first receptacle and provided with a hinged lid, of supportingarm mounted exteriorly upon the lid of the first receptacle and having a transverse terminal adapted to have a seating in said recess and contacting with the lower side of the lid of said second receptacle.
3. In combination with a first receptacle and a second receptacle seated therein, said receptacles each having a containing base with a hinged lid thereon, of a supportingbar mounted exteriorly upon the lidof the first receptacle and having a transverse ter minal extending intermediate said lid and base for a seating upon the inner side of the lid of said second receptacle, said supporting bar having a part of its body extended from its mounting outwardly and rearwardly from said lid.
4. In a lid-supporting display box for the purpose described, the combination with the display box, and a container provided with a hinged lid and seated in said display box, of a keeper mounted upon the lid of the display box and connected with the lid of said container.
5. In a lid-supporting display box for the purpose named, the combination with the display box and a container seated therein, said display box and container each being provided with a hinged lid; a supporting arm secured exteriorly upon the lid of and having a terminal extending within said display for engagement with the lid of said container.
6. A box lid attachment, comprising, in combination with a first rectangular box and a second rectangular box seated in said first box, each of said boxes being provided with a hinged lid opening toward its rear side, of a metallic strand having a contact portion disposed substantially parallel with and outwardly of the rear wall of said rectangular box and having transverse supportingarms mounted upon the ends of the lid, said supporting arms having transverse terminals disposed intermediate the lid and body of said first rectangular box. for engagement with the lid of said second rectangular box.
7. A box lid attachment, comprising, in combination with a first rectangular box having recesses formed to open upon the upper edges of its ends, and with a second rectangular box seated in said first box, each of said boxes being provided with a hinged lid opening toward its rear side, of a metallic strand having a contact portion disposed substantially parallel with and outwardly of the rear wall of said rectangular box and having transverse supporting arms mounted upon the ends of the lid, said supporting arms having transverse terminals adapted to have seatings in said recesses intermediate the lid and body of said first rectangular box, for an engagement with the lid of said second rectangular box.
In testimony whereof I have atfixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
