STORAGE AND DISPLAY BOX WITH LID SUPPORT THEREFOR Filed Feb. 18, 1957 E E INVENTOR 44/09/4151 (I 1 764815770 BY M/M ATTORNEYS United States Patent STORAGE AND DISPLAY BOX WITH LID SUPPORT THEREFOR Michael J. Figaretti, Wheeling, W. Va.
Application February 18, 1957, Serial No. 640,824
1 Claim. (Cl. 217-61) The present invention is related to hinged top containers and is more particularly directed to rectangularly shaped boxes having a lid hinged along one side to the box and including means for retaining the lid in a position for displaying the contents of said box.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a storage and display box having a hinge lid with means for at times supporting the lid in various angular positions above the box whereby the contents thereof can be readily viewed.
A further and important object of the invention is to provide a hinged lid box having a support for said lid when in any of its open positions and which support is readily detachable from the lid and/ or the box but when attached to the box only can be stored within the box without interfering with the opening and closing of the lid.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a one-piece member readily attachable to boxes with pivotal lids for engaging said lids in elevated positions and which support can be economically produced so as to be available at such low cost as to render the same disposable with the box when emptied.
Further and important objects of the invention will be in part pointed out and in part obvious in the following detailed description of the accompanying drawings wherein,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a box according to the present invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged detailed view of a portion of said box with the lid broken away showing the lid support in a storage position.
Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view taken on line 33 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a further cross sectional view taken on line 4--4 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged partial view of a corner of the box; and
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the lid support forming part of the present invention.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings, wherein like and corresponding parts are designated by similar reference characters.
-'2 by said lid can extend across edges 16 and 7 between the rear and front .of the box between the :sides 2 :and 5 for at times closing the open top .01? said :box. :Lid 8 .further has. a top face 14.-
End 5 has a top edge 15 in which are provided arrpair of slots 16 and 17 adjacent the front 3.
A device for supporting said lid is shown in Fig. 6 and is pivotally connected to the box through an opening 18 in side 5 which may be readily formed in any box of the present type whereby the elongated support wire 19 which is bent at one end portion having a lateral extension 20 and a substantially parallel end portion 21. The opposite end of said member 19 is bent having a U-shaped configuration providing lateral arms 22 and 24 which are substantially parallel to extension 20 and are connected by base 23 substantially parallel to said member 19. Arm 24 has an end 25 bent inwardly thereof.
A box as above described or a conventional cigar box may have the present lid support assembled thereto by providing opening 18 in end 5 and inserting end 21 of said member through opening 18 and then extension 20 whereupon end 21 will slide against the exterior face of side 5 and member 19 against the interior face. When not in use member 19 can be pivoted in order that 22 and 24 will each enter one of the recesses 16 and 17 for being stored therein and positioned below the edge 7 so that the lid 8 can be lowered onto said edge.
When it is desired to support the lid 8 above said box said lid is pivoted above hinge 9 and arms 22 and 24 placed against bottom 13 and top 14 respectively of said lid placing the lid therebetween. Said arms can be placed along the major portion of side 12 of said lid to hold the lid at various angles relative to said box.
It is to be appreciated that boxes can be supplied with the present support as a part thereof or the support can be supplied individually for attachment to boxes of the present type.
The invention is capable of considerable modification and such changes thereto as come within the scope of the device are deemed to be a part of the invention.
What I claim is:
A storage and display box comprising an open top box having at least one straight side extending substantially perpendicular to a straight back thereof, a lid for covering the open top of said box having one straight edge hingedly connected to said back and a second straight edge provided substantially perpendicular to said hinged edge for extending substantially parallel to and at times alongside of said box straight side, said box straight side having an opening provided therethrough, an elongated rod shaped member having a substantially straight medial portion, a lateral portion extending through said box side opening with said member straight portion positioned substantially parallel to the interior face of said box side and an end portion extending substantially parallel to said medial portion positioned on the exterior face of said box, said rod shaped member having its other end portion formed with a U-shaped configuration the sides of which are substantially parallel to and extend in substantially the same direction from said rod shaped member as said member lateral portion and capable of receiving a portion of said one of the sides of said member U-shaped end portion for storing the same with said member interiorly of said box, and the base of said U- shaped end portion exteriorly of said box.
