Description
GUSTAV A. SGHWANKE, OF BRUNSWICK, NEBRASKA.
LIED-Homann.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 29, 1908.
Application filed March 14, 1908. Serial No. 421,117.
To all whom 'it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, GUsTAv A. ScHwANxn, citizen of the United States, residing at Brunswick, in the county of Antelope and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lid-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is an improved device which is designed to be applied to a box and the hinged lid thereof, so as to support the latter in an elevated position as may be desired, to display the contents of the box or any advertising matter upon the inner surface of the lid, and which is particularly designed for use'with cigar boxes, to support the lid thereof, and display the cigars. And a further object of theinvention is an improved device of this character which may be readily and quickly applied to the box, and is adapted to support the lid in any desired adjusted position.
With these andother objects in view that will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions and arrangements of the parts that I shall hereinafter fully describe and then point out the novel features thereof, in the appended claims.
For a full understanding of the invention, and the merits thereof, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a cigar box, showing my improved lid holder applied thereto; and, Fig. 2 is a detail view in elevation, of the lid holder.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views ofthe drawing, by the same reference characters.
My improved device comprises a supporting rod 1, which is preferably constructed of an integral strip of suitable wire, or the like, the lower end of which is outwardly disposed and tapered to form a point, or tooth 2. The upper end of this rod is offset inwardly as indicated at 8, and is disposed outwardly in a line substantially perpendicular to the main portion of the rod, and to a point in alinement therewith, said end being then doubled upon itself inwardly to form the upper and lower spaced members 4. The upper extremity of this rod is disposed down- Wardly toward the lower member 4, and is tapered to a point, as indicated at 5.
A slide 6 is 'mounted for longitudinal movement on the rod 1, between the tooth 2 thereof, and thel offset portion 3, and is preferably constructed of an integral piece of Wire, one end of which is loosely coiled about the rod, and the other end of which extends outwardly from the rod, and then downwardly and substantially parallel thereto', to form an edentate clamping arm 7.
In the practical use of this im roved lid holder, the latter is applied tothe id, so that the spaced members 4 at the upper end thereof, embrace one end of the lid and the upper pointed extremity 5 thereof is embedded in such lid to prevent the upper end of the device from sllpping. The lower end of the rod is then adjusted in'relation to the corresponding end of the box, to give the lid the desired elevation, and the tooth 2 thereof embedded in the inner surface of such end, the slide 6 being then lowered, so that the edentate clamping arm 7 thereof passes freely across the outer face of the end, and bears against the same to hold the tooth 2 firmly embedded in the box, and to prevent any inward movement of the rod to ermit its accidental disenga ement from t e latter. It is evident that y chan ing the positions of the upper and lower en s of the rod relative to the lid and the adjacent end of the box, the lid may be supported at any desired elevation.
From the above description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be apparent that I have provided a simple, durable and efficient construction of device of the character described, which may be conveniently a plied to a box to securely support the li thereof in any desired elevated position; which consists of comparatively few parts that may be readily assembled, and which may be easily and cheaply manufactured.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
1; A device of the character described, comprising a supporting rod bent at its upper end to form inwardly facing spaced members adapted to embrace one end of a box lid, the rod bein formed at its lower end with an outwardly isposed tooth arran ed to be embedded in the adjacent end o' the box, and a slide mounted for longitudinal movementon the rod betweenthe spaced members and the tooth, and carrying an edentate clamping arm spaced from the rod, as and for the purpose specified.
2. A device of the character described,
' end to form inwardly facing'speced members comprising a supporting rod bent at its upper end oi which is angulstrly disposed in spaced relation to the rod und constitutes :in edenedapted to embrace one end of a box lid, the tete clampingT arm, as and for, the purpose rod being formed at its lower end with an specified.
