SUPPORT FOR TOP ROLLS 0F SPINNING, TWISTING, OR LIKE MACHINES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, i VILLIAM H. Gonn- SMITH, Jr., of Biddeford, in the county of York and State of Maine, a citizen of the United States, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Supports for Top Rolls of Spinning, Twisting, or Like Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and ex act description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification in explaining its nature.
The essential object of the present invention is to provide a roll support of'simple construction andhaving separate, independently-removable and independently-adjustable bearings for the respective top rolls.-
The invention can best be seen and understood by reference to the drawings in which Figure 1 is a plan of the improved support viewed from the top side thereof. Fig. 2 is a plan of the support viewed from the under side thereof. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of one of the fingers of the support with clip-forming bearings thereon to which special reference will hereinafter be made, and Fig. 4t is a view in perspective of one of the clips. Figs. 0 and 6 are side elevations of modified details of construction to which special reference will hereinafter "be made.
Referring to the drawings :1 represents the main bar of the support which is mounted upon the roll stand (not shown) in the usual manner. Projecting laterally from this bar are a series of fingers 2 between which the respective top rolls as, 6, care disposed, these rolls being shown in dotted lines. Each of the fingers 2 is fixed to the bar 1 by a collar 3 on the inner end of the finger and from which the finger extends, the same being preferably bent as shown in Fig. 3. The fingers are preferably made, however, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6 either out of a continuous rod or bent around the main bar and spot-welded thereto with the ends of the rod brought together and spot-welded to the main bar after the manner shown in Fig. 6. Each of the fingers is provided also with elongated slots 4 and 5 extending through the fingers from the top to the bottom edges thereof. Of these slotsthe slots 4 are made in those portions of the fingers adjacent the ends of the inner interposed sets of rolls a, I), while the slots 5 are made in those portions of the fingers adja- Specification of Letters Patent.

cent the ends of the outer interposed rolls 0.
Inasmuch as the slots assist in providing adjustable bearings for the respective rolls, as will later be explained, they are accordingly of suflicient length to permit of considerable variation in the setting of the respective rolls or such as may ordinarily bedesired to be obtained.
Mounted upon each of the fingers are a series of sliding clips 6. Each of these clips comprises a body or seating portion 7 which bears against the bottom edges of the finger on which the clip is mounted. From the body portion 7 of the clip there extend upwardly sets of spaced flanges S, 9. which embrace respectively the opposite side edges of the finger and project laterally therefrom. The flanges of the clips operate to position the clips upon the fingers and to prevent the turning or lateral displacement of the clips as they are moved along the fingers. The
flanges of the clips provide also bearings for the ends of the top rolls. Those clips mounted upon the interior fingers of the support each provide bearings for the adjacent ends of the two rolls which lie in alinement with one another on opposite sides of the clip. Inasmuch as the outermost fingers assist only in the support of the rolls lying adjacent their inner side edges, the clips mounted upon these fingers need have no spaced flanges to embrace the fingers upon the outer side edges thereof and in such case, as shown, the clips are provided only with plain upturned edges or flanges 10 which embrace the outer side edges of the fingers for assisting in the lateral retention of the clips as aforesaid.
The clips are secured to the fingers each by means of a screw member 11 extending through the slot in the finger and fastening into the body of the clip which is bound to the finger as the head of the screw draws against the top side of the finger upon the tightening of the screw. Such retention permits of an easy release of the clip from the top side of the finger. This effect may be obtained simply by loosening the screw when the clip may be moved to any point of adjusted position within the limits of the slot through which the screw extends.
The clips are all separately adjustable, a set of three clips being placed upon each finger and of which two of the clips are placed upon the finger to be adjustable r onnrcn I Within the range of the slot 4- therein and one clip Within the range of the slot 5 therein. 7 V
The clips are all independently removable, any clip of the series of clips on each finger being removable Without disturbing the others.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. A support for top rolls of the character specified comprising a carrier bar, fingers laterally projecting therefrom, said fingers having elongated slots therein extending through the fingers between the top and bottom edges thereof, clips arranged adjacent said slots and slidable on said fingers, said clips having bodies bearing against one slotted edge of each of the respective fingers with spaced fianges projecting from said bodies of the clips embracing the side edges of said fingers and extending laterally therefrom to provide bearings for the top rolls,
screw fastenings adapted to have engagement With said fingers from the top sides thereof With shanks extending through the slots in said fingers and connecting With the bodies of said clips. 7
