Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 19,1913.
Application filed May 24, 1911, Serial No. 629,133. Renewed February 20 1913. Serial No. 749,729.
To all whom/2'16 may concern:
Be it known that I, BURT A. PETERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rockford, in the county of Winnebago and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Attaching Dofier-Supporting Rails to Spinning-Frames, of which the following is a specification.
When in use, spinning-frame dofiers of the portable type are supported upon rails attached to and extending along the front of the spinning frames. The rails have been connected to the frames by means of clips.
This invention relates to the construction of the clips and more particularly to the means for securing the clips to the spinning frame.
Certain features of the construction herein disclosed are claimed broadly in my copending application Serial No. 631,042, filed June 3, 1911.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a transverse vertical sectional View through the spindle rail of a spinning frame, showing a doffer-supporting rail secured to the spindle rail by means embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the parts shown in Fig. 1.
The drawings represent at 1 a portion of the ladder or spindle rail of a spinning frame, 2 being the spindles and 3 being a doffer-supporting rail of any suitable form. The doffer rail is secured to the spindle rail at intervals in its length by means of clips 4 each formed from a strip of metal, and each comprising a fiat portion adapted to lie in contact with the top of the spindle rail between two adjacent spindles.
The forward portion of each clip comprises means for supporting and securing the doffer rail 3. Said means comprises a vertical downwardly-extending portion 5 and a portion 6 extending forwardly from the lower end of said vertical port-ion, the portion 6 forming a seat for the dof'fer rail. The latter is held rigidly upon its seat with one side of the rail in contact with the vertical portion 5 by means of hooks 7 preferably formed by shearing away a portion of the sides of the strip forming the clip, and bending the free ends so obtained to form hooks, as shown. In the manufacture of the clip, the hooks 7 are not bent as far as shown in the drawings, but are left extending outwardly far enough so that the doffer rail can be inserted laterally onto its seat 6.
The rear or inner end of the clip comprises a downwardly extending portion 8 and a portion 9 extending forward from the lower end of the portion 8 sufiiciently to underlie the web 1 of the ladder rail 1. A clamp screw 10 extends horizontally through the portion 8 and is arranged to bear against the rear edge of the spindle rail. A similar screw 11 extends through the portion 9 into contact with the lower edge of the web 1 It will be seen that the screw 10 holds the clip in firm contact with the front edge of the spindle rail, and that the screw 11 holds the clip securely down upon the top of the spindle rail.
When a doffer rail is to be attached to a spinning frame, a suitable number of clips 4 are placed upon the Spindle rail and firmly secured thereto by tightening up the screws 10 and 11. The dofier rail is then inserted sidewise onto the seats 6 of the clips, and the hooks 7 driven down to the position indicated in Fig. l to lock the doffer rail rigidly in place. The distance bet-ween the center line of the spindles and the front edge of the spindle rail varies in different spinning frames, and when necessary a shim (not shown) may be placed bet-ween the portion 5 of the clips and the front edge of the spindle rail, so as to space the doffer rail the proper distance from the spindles.
I claim as my invention: v
1. The combination, with the spindle rail of a spinning frame, of a doffer-supporting rail, and a clip extending across the top of the spindle rail and having a portion at its forward end to carry said doffer-supporting rail, said clip having a portion at its rear end underlying the spindle rail, and a vertical screw seated in the last mentioned portion and bearing against the lower side of the spindle rail to clamp the clip down firmly on said rail.
2. The combination, with the spinning rail of a spinning frame, of a clip comprising a portion extending across the top of the spindle rail and further comprising a downwardly extending portion at each end of said other portion, a do-ffer-supporting rail secured toone of said downwardly extending portions, and two screws seated in the other downwardly extending portion, one of said screws being horizontally disposed and arranged to bear against a rear edge of the spindle rail, and. the other screw being vertically disposed and arranged to bear against the lower side of the spindle rail.
The combination, with the spindle rail of a Spinning frame, of a clip formed from an integral strip of metal and comprising a portion extending across the top of the spindle rail, a portion extending downwardly in front of the spindle rail, and a portion extending downwardly in the rear of the spindle rail, the lower end of the last memtioned portion being bent into a substantially horizontal plane a screw extending horizontally through said rear downwardly extending portion and arranged to bear against the rear edge of the spindle rail, a screw extending vertically through said horizontal portion and arranged to bear against the lower side of the spindle rail, and a dolfier-snpporting rail secured to the downwardly extending portion in front of the spindle rail.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
BURT A. PETERSON.
