ATTACHING DEVICE FOR TROLLEY-HANGERS.
Application filed. August 22, 1917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH A. NnnLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at McRober-ts, in the county of Letcher and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attaching Devices for Trolley-Hangers; and I do here by declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use-the same.
This invention has for its object to provide an attaching or supporting device for trolley wire hangers which shall be of simple and inexpensive construction and effident in use.
Another object is the provision of a supporting device for trolley hangers which is particularly designed for supporting hangers from beams or rails used in the frame structure of mines.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter specifically described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 5 indicates the body plate of the attaching or support ng dev ce, which is provided at one end with an 111- wardly directed clamping member 6, providing a recess 7 to accommodate the flange of a rail or beam. body plate is formed with transversely extending teeth or ribs 8, and an elongated slot The other part 10 of the attaching device includes a flat plate 11 of approximately the same widthand thickness as the plate 5 and havlng an aperture 12 therein to accommodate a bolt 13, which also extends through the elongated slot 9 in the body plate ,5. The plate 10 is adapt'edfor adjustment longitudinally of the ribbed end of the body plate 5, and is also provided with ribs 14; adapted to cooperate with the ribs 8.0f the body plate 5 to secure the plates in adjusted position. The inner terminal of the plate 10 is directed angularly, as indicated at 15, to cooperate with the clamping member 6 of the body plate to secure the device in position upon a rail or beam.
The bolt 13, which clamps the twoplates or parts of the attaching device in adjusted position, also supports the trolley wire hanger, designated generally by the numeral 16, which includes the usual insulator 17 and the clamping or gripping members 18. The bolt 13 is threaded in an opening 19 formed in the insulator 17, and by advancing the insulator upon the threads of the bolt the ribbed portions of the plates 5 and 10 are drawn together and thus secured in adjusted position.
The attaching device may be applied with equal facility to the base of a rail 20, as shown in Fig. 4:, or to the flange or head of an I-beam, as suggested in Fig. 6. In either case, the body plate 5 is laid upon the flange or head of the beam or rail and is moved so as to engage the clamping member 6 with the flange or head. The other plate 10 of the attaching or supporting device is subsequentlyplaced in operative position against the body plate 5 and is moved so as to engage the angular terminal 15 with the opposite side of the flange or head from that engaged by the clamping member 6. The insulator 17 is subsequently threaded upon the bolt 13 and the entire structure is thus rigidly secured by the single bolt to the rail or beam. The slot 9 permits movement of the bolt 13 with relation to the body plate 5 and consequently permits the two parts or plates comprising the attaching device or support to be adjusted relative to each other.
In the modification of the invention illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6, the two parts of the attaching device or support, designated by the numerals 5 and 10, are identical in construction to the type shown in Figs. 2 and 3, except that in the modified type the medial portions of the two plates intermediate the ribbed terminals and the rail or beam-engaging terminals are offset, as indicated at 21. The object and effect of offsetting the plates is to permit the latter to be applied to the bottom flange or head of a supporting beam or rail, as suggested in Fig. 6, without droppingthe trolley wire 22, which is held in the clamping members 18 too far below the supporting beam or rail.
lVhat I claim is:
An attaching device comprising a pair of clamping plates extending parallel with each other and each including vertical portions and one plate having a pair of horizontal portions and the other plate having a single horizontal portion, one horizontal portion of one of said plates having a slot and its other horizontal portion being bent upon itself to engage a face of a supporting beam opposite from that engaged by the last mentioned horizontal portion, the horizontal portion of the other plate having an opening in registration with the slot and having the end of its vertical portion bent on an incline to engage the first named face of the beam,
serrations formed on the opposing faces of z the horizontal portions of said plates, and a. bolt extending through the opening and slot and adapted to be threaded into a hanger.
