Be it known that I, JOHN W. AULD, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Atlantic City, in the county of Atlantic and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Plumbs, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to new and useful improvements in plumbs; and its object is to pro- Vide a simple .and inexpensive device which can be readily attached to or detached from a strip of wood or other suitable material and which will accurately indicate whether or not the strip is in a horizontal or a vertical position.

The invention consists of an angular strap having a lug at one vend and a set-screw at the other end, whereby said strap may be securely fastened upon a strip, and a graduated quadrant is formed integral with this strap. A weighted index is pivoted to the strap at a point concentric with the quadrant, and this index is free to move upon its pivot so as to assume a vertical position at all times.

The invention also consists of the further novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accom panyingdrawings, showing the preferred form of my invention, and in which- .Figure l is a perspective View of a plumb. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section through the strap of the plumb, and Fig. 3 is a central vertical section therethrough.

Referring to the figures by numerals of reference, l is a strap having integral arms 2 at the ends thereof and parallel with each other, and one of these arms has an inwardlyextending lug or prong 3, while the other arm is provided with a set-screw 4. A quadrant 5 is formed integral with strap 1 and extends downward therefrom, and it is graduated to indicate degrees of a circle. A pin 6 is located on the strap 1 at a point concentric with the quadrant 5, and loosely mounted thereon is an index 7, formed of lead or any other suitable heavy material. The lower portion of this index is preferably thickened, so that said index will remain at all times in a vertical position independently of the movement of the strap l and its quadrant. To use the plumb herein described, the same is first connected to a strip of wood or other suitable material having parallel straight edges by placing the arms 2 at opposite sides thereof and turning the set-screw 4 so as to cause said sides of the strip to be engaged by the lug 3 and the screw, respectively. Said strip can then be placed on end, and when it assumes a vertical position the index 7 will so indicate upon the graduated 'quadrant 5. The plumb can then be readily removed from the strip when not in use and can be conveniently carried in a small compass.

By using a device such as herein described it becomes unnecessary to use a cord and weight, such as heretofore, and which have been found to be objectionable because of the length of time before the same assumes its final vertical position. In the figures of the drawings the strip to which the plumb may be connected has been shown by dotted lines.

In the foregoing description I have shown the preferred form of my invention, but Ido not limit myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spiritior sacrificing any of the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is-- A plumb attachment comprising a strap, parallel arms extending therefrom, a lug upon one of the arms, a set-screw upon the other arm forming with said lug a clamping device, a graduated quadrant carried by the strap, and an index pivoted upon the strap at a point concentric with the quadrant, said index being adapted to assume a vertical position by gravity.
