Description

No. 834,765. PATENTED O T. 30, 1906.
. J. SBGHLER.
v 'PLUMB LEVEL. APPLICATION FILED JULY 16, 1906.
UNITED STATES JACOB SECHLER, OF ECONOMY, PENNSYLVANIA.
PLUMB-LEVEL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 30, 1906.
application filed July 16,1906. Serial No. 326,460.
To a whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, JAcoB SEQHLER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Economy, in the countyof Beaver and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plumb- Levels, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accom anying drawings.
T is invention relates to a combination plumb and level, the object being to provide a device which will serve the double purpose of a plumb and a level and to use the plumbbob as a substitute for the so-called spiritlevel.
The invention comprises a base-bar serving as a straight-edge, a plate projecting therefrom provided with a segmental gage, and a plumb-bob suspended from said plate in such a manner as to adapt it to register with the gage at different points thereon.
The construction of the improvement will be fully described hereinafter in connection,
with the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this s ecification, and its novel features will be de ed in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side eleva tion of the improved lumb-level 1n osition.
for use as a level. ig. 2 is a sim ar view showing the base-bar of the device in vertical position, adapting it for use as a lumb; and Fig. 3 is a similar view showing t e base-bar in horizontal position, with the plate and plumb-bob depending therefrom.
The reference-numeral l designates a basebar or straight-edge, to which is secured a plate or standard 2, the latter being preferably curved on its outer edge and provided on its opposite edge with a projecting lug 3 from which is suspended, by means of a cord 4, a plumb-bob 5. The means for securing the cord to the lug 3 may be varied, but should be of such a character as to ermit of a free movement of the cord with s ight friction. The connection for this purpose here shown comprises a ring 6, fitting an opening .in the lug, and the suspending-cord is secured in any suitable manner to the ring.
The gage 7 is a segment preferably formed integral with the plate 2 and provided at its center and its ends with graduations 8, 9, and 10, serving as indicators.
When the device is to be used as a substi tute for the spirit-level, the base is applied to the surface to be leveled, and this may be done by placing the base 1 upon the surface from above, with the plump-bob above the base, asshown in Fig. 1, in register with the graduations 8, or by placing the base upon the surface from below, with the hob and gage depending below the base and the bob regg s terlng with the graduations 10, as shown in 1 3.
Wl 1en the device is to be used as a plumb, the base is arranged in the vertical position shown in Fig. 2 to adapt the plumb-bob to register with the central graduations 9.
It will be apparent that the device constructed as above described is adapted to serve either as a plumb or level, thus combining in a single simple and inexpensive implement the functions of the two instruments.
As has been suggested above, other means than that shown may be used for securing and suspending the plumb-bob cord, and the invention therefore includes all such variatlons and modlficatlons as may be resorted to without departing from the terms and scope of the claims.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'
1. A combination plumb and level comrisingxa base-bar, a plate carried by said ase-bar and arranged at right angles thereto, a substantially semicircular gage carried by said plate and having each end connected thereto, a lug carried by said plate and arranged centrally of the ends of said gage, said gage being provided with indicating-marks near each end thereof, and an indicatingmark arranged on said age centrally of the indicating-marks at eac extremity thereof,
and a plumb-bob suspended from said lug,
and adapted to register with either of said indicating-marks. I
2. A plumb-level, comprising a base-bar, a plate carried by said base-bar and arranged at right angles thereto, a substantially semicircular gage formed integral with said plate, an integral lug projecting from said plate and arranged centrally of the extremities of said semicircular gage, a plumb-bob suspended from said integral lug, said semicircular gage provided with a series 'of indicating-marks with which the supporting medium of said plumb-bob is ada ted to register. In testimony w ereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
