GROVER E. WALLER, OF LAVERNE, OKLAHGMA.
COMBINED LEVEL, PLUMB, AND GAGE.
Application filcd June 8, 1917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gnovnn E. l/VALLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Laverne, in the county of Harper and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Levels, Pluinbs, and Gages; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. I
This invention relates to a combined level, plumb and gage, and an object of the in vention to provide a device of this character that will take the place of the ordinary plumb bob, spirit level and steel square, the said device being so constructed that the horizontal, vertical or inclined position of an object can be accurately, conveniently and expeditiously ascertained.
Other objects will appear and be better understood from that embodiment of my invention of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part thereof, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the combined level, plumb and gage,
Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof,
Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 4 is a section on the line 44 of Fig. 3, r
Fig. 5 is a view on an enlarged scale of portions of the concentric dials, and
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the dial plate detached from operative position.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the numeral 1 designates the device as an en tirety. The device comprises a stock or body formed of a plurality of hingedly connected sections, designated, respectively, by the numerals 2, 3 and l, the sections 2 and 3 being hinged, as at 5, at one side of the stock, and the sections 3 and 4: being hinged, as at 6, at the other side of the stock so that the device when not in use can be folded into a small compass. The intermediate section or section 3 is provided on opposite sides and adjacent the ends with studs 7, which are adapted to be received by openings in the free ends ofresilient tongues 8 carried by the hinged ends of the sections 2 and 4 when the sections are in unfolded position, so as to lock the sections against movement. tion 3 has one side thereof recessed, as at 9, the said recess opening into the opposite longitudinal edges of the section 3, and a pair of rectangular shaped plates 10 and 11 close the ends of the recess 9 and each has the longitudinal edges thereof flanged and engaged over the sides of the section 3. The plate 10 has an elongated slot 12 therein and a glass plate 13 underlies the plate 10 and is interposed between the plate 10 and the adjacent edge of the section 3.
lvlounted within the recess 9 is a rectangular shaped. body or plate 14, formed prefcrably of metal, and has the opposite ends thereof bent outwardly, as shown at 15, and engaged against the adjacent side walls of the recess 9. The plate 14 is provided with a central offset circular portion 16, which is struck outwardly from the plate 14 and has the outer face thereof divided into four quadrants each of which is graduated into degrees corresponding with the degree marks on an ordinary steel square. A ring shaped body 17 encircles the periphery of the offset portion 16, and is divided into graduated quadrants of ninety degrees, as shown more particularly in Figs. 5 and 6 of the drawings. The offset portion 16 and the ring shaped body 17 provide a pair of concentrically disposed dials, and a shaft 18 extends through the offset portion 16, at the center thereof, and has one end journaled in a bearing 19 on the inner wall of the recess or chamber 9 and the other end of the shaft is journaled in a bearing 20 cemented to a glass plate 21 that closes the outer side of the recess or chamber 9. A needle 22 is carried by the shaft 18, for movement around the dials, and has one end provided with an arrow head 23 and the other end provided with a weight 2 1. The pointed end of the arrow head 23 extends beyond the periphery of the offset portion 16 and lies opposite and is adapted to cooperate with the graduations on the ring shaped body 17, and the said head 23 is provided with a substantially arrow head shaped opening 25, the pointed end of which opposes and cooperates with the graduations on the offset portion 16.
-In use, the horizontal, vertical or inclined positions of an object is to be ascertained by placing that edge of the stock that carries the plate 11 against the object. If the surface of the object is level the needle will assume the position shown in Fig. 1, and if inclined, the weighted end of the needle will gravitate and effect movement of the headed end of the needle to a position opposite to those degree marks on the ring shaped body 17 and on the offset portion 16, that correspond to the degree of inclination of the object.
When ascertaining the vertical position of the object the stock is placed in vertical posi tion against the object and the position of the needle will determinethe position of the object with relation to'the vertical.
It is evident that various changes might be resorted to int-he form, construction and arrangement of the several parts Without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention What I claimas new is 1. A device of the class described comprising a stock having a recess therein, a plate mounted Within the recess and having an outwardly offset circular portion thereon divided into graduated quadrants, a ring shaped body encircling the offset portion of the plate and divided into graduated quadrants, and a needle mounted for movement around the respective quadrants of the opposed ofi'set portion and the ring-shaped N ing a stock consisting of two end sections,-
and an intermediatesection, the end sections being hingedly connected to the opposite sides of the intermediate section, a dial plate car- 'ied by the intermediate section, a needle mounted for movement around the dial, studs carried by and positioned on the opposite sides of the intermediate section and resilient tongues carried by the end sections opposite the hinges and having openings therein for receiving the studs when the sections are in unfolded position. I
In testimony whereof I alllX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
