JOHN H. WYATT, WALKER HALEY, AND CLAY HALEY, OF ROCKY FORD, COLORADO.
LEVEL,
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 29, 1914.
Application filed August 4, 1913. Serial No. 782,917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN H. WYATT, WVALKEP. HAL Y, and CLAY HALEY, citizens of the United States, residing at Rocky Ford, in the county of Otero and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Levels, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates broadly to measuring instruments and more particularly. to levels having for its primary object to provide a device of this character in which the plumb element will be highly sensitive for accurately determining various angles.
Another object of the invention resides 1n the provision of a common pivot pin which has associated therewith a pair of dial hands which are actuated by a weight, the pivot pin having the opposite ends thereof in point contact only with the glass or other transparent element which is used in connection with the level so as to insure a positive actuation of the weight reducing the friction to a minimum and at the same time preventing the dial hands from contacting with either the dial cups or the glasses which are disposed over the cups.
Other objects as well as the nature, characteristic features and scope of our invention will be more readily understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims forming a part of this specification:
Referring to the drawings: Figure 1 is a plan view of the device constructed in accordance with my invention, a portion of the stock being broken away so as to disclose a compass which is associated therewith; Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a plan view of the compass; and Fig. 4 is a detail fragmentary view of one of the transparent elements disclosing the same in engagement with one end of the pivot pin and further showing the position of the dial hand between the dial cup and said element.
In the drawings wherein is shown the preferred embodiment of this invention a stock 5 is provided which may be of the ordinary or any desired form being provided midway the ends thereof with a transverse opening 6 in which is seated a casing 7. The casing in the present instance comprises a circular block of wood having an opening 8 through the center thereof and provided with various offset portions on both faces thereof for the reception of the dial cups, glasses and clamp rings which will be more fully hereinafter described. Mounted in the casing 7 and on each side of the opening 8 is a dial cup 9 which is provided with the usual graduation marks 10 on the outer face thereof and an annular flange 11 which is in engagement with the transparent or crystalline element 12 in the present instance being a circular glass of a slightly larger diameter than that of the dial cup. One of the transparent elements 12 is arranged over each of the dial cups as shown to advantage in Fig. 2 of the drawings and is held in engagement therewith through the medium of clamp rings 13 which are fixedly secured in the easing 7 Revolubly mounted in the dial cups 9 is a pivot pin 14 the opposite ends of which taper to a point as indicated at 15 and are in point contact only with the transparent elements 1.2. The pivot pin 14 has associated therewith a weight 16 which is arranged on the pin approximately midway the ends thereof and is keyed or otherwise rigidly secured thereto so as to prevent the movement of the same on the shaft thereby eliminating any friction from being created between the sides of the weight and the inner faces of the dial in view of the fact that the weight is secured to the shaft in spaced relation from the inner faces of the dial cups. The pivot pin 14 carries thereon a pair of dial hands 17 one of which is arranged adjacent each end 15 of the pin between the dial cup and the transparent element, in spaced relation to both as advantageously illustrated in Figs. 2 and 4 of the drawings. The weight 16 may be of any desired form, in the present instance being shown to be an ordinary segment which has been found to perform the desired function in view of the arcuate face thereof being freely movable within the opening 8 of the casing.
The stock 5 is provided with an opening cup 19 in the opening 18 a clamp ring 25 is mounted in the stock 5 having a portion thereof in engagement with the cup.
From the foregoing it is obvious that the device may be advantageously used for truing walls, foundations or the like, the parts thereof being so associated as to positively cooperate for producing the desired result at the same time reducing the cost of manufacture in devices of this character to a minimum in view of the simplicity of each of the parts used in this invention.
It will be understood that the above description and accompanying drawings comprehend only the general and preferred embodiment of our invention and that various minor changes in details of construction, proportion and arrangement of the parts may be made Within the scope of the appended claims and without sacrificing any of the advantages of our invention.
Having thus fully described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a level, the combination of a stock, two concentric dials carried thereby in spaced apart relation one to another, transparent elements over each dial, a pivot pin revolubly carried by said dials having its ends in point contact only with said transparent elements, and a dial hand rigid with said pivot pin and in spaced apart relation masses to said dials and transparent elements, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a level, the combination of a stock, concentric dials carried thereby in spaced apart relation one to another, transparent elements over each of said dials having perfectly smooth faces next adjacent thereto, a pivot pin revolubly carried by said dials having each end tapered to a point for engagement with said transparent element, and a dial hand rigid with said pivot pin and in spaced apart relation to said dials and transparent elements, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a level, the combination of a stock, two crystalline elements carried thereby in spaced apart relation one to the other, a pivot pin intermediate said crystalline elements in point contact only therewith, means for pivotally mounting said pivot pin intermediate said crystalline elements, and a dial hand rigidly carried by said pivot pin, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
