To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, RICHARD K. Roaon, a citizen of the Llnited States, residing at Willard, in the county of Seneca and State of New York, rave invented new and useful Improvements in Jombined Spirit-Levels and Plumb-Bobs; oi": which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a combined spirit level and plumb hob, and it has for its object to produce a simple device of this class which may be conveniently used in either capacity.

' A further object of the invention is to produce a combined plumb bob and spirit level having a simple and improved attaching device whereby'it'may be quickly and conveniently connected with or detached from a suspending cord.

' Viith these and other ends'in view which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointedout in the claims.

In the accompanying drawing has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of I the invention, it being however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the claims may beresorted to when desired.

In the drawing,-Figure 1 is a perspective view, showing the device in use as a plumb showing is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 3-3 in Fig. 2. Fig. d is a longitudinal sectiorial view taken on the line 4 -4 in Fig. 3.

Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like characters of reference.

The improved plumb bob comprises a casing 15 which is preferably rectangular in cross section, although no limitation is made in this respect. The casing has a detachable lid 16 which may be held in posi tion by fastening means, such as screws 17.

The two sides of the casing are provided with sight openings 18, and the lid 16, likewise, has a sight opening 19. A conical hook 22 and into which the looped end of acord 23 may be quickly adjusted and where said cord will be quickly and accurately centered by the action of the convergent side members of the V-shaped hook the apex of whichlies in the longitudinal axis of the device.

A spirit level 25 is mounted in the casing 15 where it may be secured by a filling 26 of plaster of Paris or other suitable material ofa plastic nature which will enable the level to be held securely without obstructing the sight openings.

The operation and advantages of this invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the. drawing.

Whcnf the device is to be used as a plumb bob, it is connected with the suspending cord 23.. For use as a level it may be quickly detached from the cord and used in the well known manner of an ordinary spirit level. I

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is

1. A. device of the class described com prising a casing, substantially square in cross section and including a bottom memher, an endmember, side members and a" lid, said side members and lid being provided with sight openings, a conical indicator fitted in the open end of the casing, fastening members connecting the lid with the end member and with the conical indicator, and a spirit level inset in the casing and visible through the sight openings.
