To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT K. FRANTZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Flc-urtown, in the county of Montgomery and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Level Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in adjustable level attachments, the object of the invention being to provide a relatively small compact device which may be readily carried about in the pocket of the user, and may be quickly attached to a board having a straight edge, so that a plumb or level of any desired length may be quickly made.
A further object is to provide a device of this kind which dispenses with the necessity for carrying a large and cumbersome board with the other tools of the mechanic, and in lieu thereof provide a small device which may be attached to any board, and in accordance with its position on the board operate either as a level or a plumb.
it further object is to provide an attachment of this kind which may be operated without attachment to any board, and which may be manufactured and sold at a compa ratively low price, and which will be ethcient in all respects in the performance of its functions.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangeu'ients of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1, is a. view in side elevation illustrating my improvements. Fig. 2, is a similar View of the opposite side of the device. Fig. 3, is a plan view. Fig. 4t, is a view in elevation showing one manner of attaching my improved device to a board having a straight edge. Fig. 5, is a view in section on an enlarged scale on the line -5 of Fig. 4, and Figs. 6, and 7, are views in elevation illustrating other ways of attaching my improved device to a board having a straight edge.
My improved device comprises a metal plate 1 and a metal casing 2, the latter confining a glass tube 3 containing liquid to form a spirit level. ing 6, while the tongue 5 is made with an elongated slot 7. The lower end of the triangular plate 1, which constitutes the apex of the triangle, is also provided with a circular screw receiving opening 8, and in these openings 6, 7, and 8, screws are to be positioned to secure the device to a board as will be hereinafter explained. Casing 2, in which the glass tube 3 is preferably held by means of plaster or cement, is secured to the rear face of plate 1 by means of screws 11 which extend through openings in the plate, and are screwed into threaded sockets tapped in the ends of easing 2.
It will be noted that the straight edge of plate 1 is cut away as shown at 12 to expose the tube 3, and as the casing 2 is open at its upper edge and is cut away at one side as shown at 13, the bubble in the liquid in tube 3 can be readily observed from the edge or from either side of my improved device.
The lower edge 14: of casing 2 constitutes a straight edge which may be utilized to determine levels, but the device while adapted for use by itself, is primarily intended to be secured to a board 10* having a straight edge, so that the level or plumb as the case may be, may have an extended straight edge so as to perform the functions of the ordinary level and plumb in general use. Various ways of attaching the device to the board may be utilized, and while in Figs. 4, 6, and 7, I show three different methods of attachment, it is to be understood that these are only samples of how the device may be connected, and by no means exhaust such methods of attachment.
In Fig. 4C, the board 10 is shown provided with a circular opening 15, and into this opening, the casing 2 is projected, said casing at its corners is rounded as shown at 16,
so that the ends of the casing have a smooth surface engaging the wall of opening 15, and allow the device to be adjusted in the arc of a circle until it properly accords with the straight edge of the board. Plate 1, with its openings 6, 7, and 8, is especially adapted for such accurate adjustment, the method employed being as follows: The device is first positioned in the opening 15, and a' screw 17 projected through opening 6, and screwed into board l0. A second screw 18 is projected through the slot 7, and screwed into the board 10, but is not screwed home, allowing the plate to be adjusted with screw 16 as a fulcrum until the bubble in the spirit level shows the device to be properly in accord with the straight edge of the board. Screw 18 is then tightened to clamp the device, and a screw 20 then positioned through opening 8, and driven into board 10 secures the device against possibility of movement. The screw 20 therefore operates as a permanent lock to prevent any accidental movement of the device, and is only screwed into place after the device is properly adjusted in accordance with the straight edge.
In Fig. 6, my improved device is shown with casing 2 located in a recess 21 in one edge of board 10 with the upper edge of the plate and casing registering with the straight edge of the board.
In Fig. 7, my improved device is shown in reversed position, that is, plate 1 positioned against the board 10, and in this instance is shown at right angles to the board, because the said. board is to be used as a plumb and not as a level. To facilitate the observation of the spirit level fromeither side of the board, an opening 22 is provided in the board, and to enable the device to be thus reversed from side to side, and still countersink the screws 17 and 20, the walls of openings 6 and 8 are beveled at both sides as shown.
Various other slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described, without departing from my invention, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A device of the character described, comprising a fiat plate, a casing located entirely on one side of the plate and secured to the plate with its upper edge flush with the up per edge of the plate. said plate being of general triangular form having extended tongues at its upper edge, one of said tongues having a circular screw-receiving opening therein, the other of said tongues having a screw-receiving slot therein, and said plate between its ends having a circular screwreceiving opening therein, substantially as described.
