PATENT OFFICE.
PLUIVlB-LEVEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters latent No. 745,146, dated November 24, 1903.
Application filed May 6, 1903. Serial No. 155,834. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be itknown that LWILLIAM B. BRADSHAW, residing at Ennis, in the county of Ellis and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plumb-Levels, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates, more definitely defined, to plumb-levels having connected therewith other devices of special utility. S peoifically stated, the invention resides in a combined plumb-level, compass, and a line-sight of improved and useful construction, which I will proceed to describe in detail and point out the novel features in the claim.
Reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a view showing my invention in side elevation. Fig. 2 isa top plan view. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view through the body portion and the pivoted box member, and Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view.
In constructing my invention I employ an elongated body portion A, preferably formed of wood, and provide therein, about midway, a suitable recess adapted to receive a metal casing B, the latter consisting of an upper extended portion 0 and a lower enlarged portion D. The outer edge of this receptacle is provided with a right-angle flange, the portion E of which is formed into one-quartercircle shape, having its face graduated or marked into degrees, as may be desired.
F indicates an elongated box-shaped member having a glass front G. The box F is pivotally supported at H within the casing B and adapted to swing freely to vertical position.
The pivotal point H should be located at a common center within an are as defined by the quarter-circle flange-plate E. The lower end of the box F is provided with a pointer I, adapted to indicate degrees on the graduated flange E, according to the positionof the body portion A with relation to the pivoted member above described.
Within the box F, I arrange a bob J, supported by any suitable thread or Wire K, fastened to a projecting pin L at the upper end of the box.
M indicates a lower pin having anupturned point arranged to be in alinement with the bob J when the box F is at rest or vertical position.
On the upper side of the body portion A, I arrange a compass N.
O P indicate end sights, consisting of members hinged to suitable depressed boxes Q, adapted to receive the said members in folded or turned-down position. The memberO may be formed as common in rear sights and provided with a small pin-hole. The member P, forming the front sight, may be ring-shaped, as shown, and is provided with a horizontallyarranged Wire, as common with such sights.
It is apparent that a plumb-level constructed and having a compass and front and rear sights as invented by me is novel and useful. Obviously my level is adapted for use as all similar plumb-levels. Increased advantage resides in my invention not only from its improved construction, but in theaddition thereto of the inclosed bob, whereby proper working of the level is indicated. The sights are useful for various purposes-as, for instance, running lines, getting proper heights for piers or posts, or leveling for buildings, grading, ditching, 850., and by aid of the compass angular lines he established. The pivoted box F is adapted to be folded down Within the casing B and fastened by any suitable locking means.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire tosecure by Letters Patent, is-- An improved device of the character described, consisting of a body portion having pended bob and lower fixed point within the I said box or pivoted member, substantiallyas described. I
WILLIAM B. BRADSHAW.
