E.D.BEATTY.
PLUMB AND LEVEL ATTACHMENT FOR RULERS.
No. 588,852. Patented Aug. 24,1897.
UNITED STATES PATENT. OFFICE.
EDWARD D. BEATTY, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
PLUMB AND LEVEL ATTACHMENT FOR RULERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 588,852, dated August 24, 1897.
Application filed October 15, 1895.
To all whom it floaty concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD D. BEATTY, of
Louisville; in the county of J etferson and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Plumb and Level Attachments for Rules, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to combine with an ordinaryfoot-rule a level and plumb attachment, the said attachment being so connected with the rule that the latter can be carried in the pocket as convenientlyas though the attachment were omitted.
A further object of the invention is to provide a means whereby a level-glass may be made to rest upon the end of a foot-rule or upon a side thereof, as may be required for the leveling or plumbing of a given object.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
Figure l is a perspective view of a two-foot rule folded and illustrating the attachment as resting upon the upper edge of the rule or in a position to serve as a level; and Fig. 2 illustrates the attachment as resting upon an end of the rule, the rule being in vertical position, or in position to be employed as a plumb.
In carrying out the invention a level-glass 10, containing a suitable amount of liquid, is located within the casing 11 of a length equal to the width of the rule and pivotally connected with a member of a rule A, preferably through the medium of a single link 12. This link is ordinarily pivoted to the rule near one of its ends and adjacent to one of its side surfaces, and is also pivoted at or near the center of the casing ll upon one side. The length of the link 12 is such that the casing may be carried to an engagement with a side edge of Serial No. 565,713. (No model.)
a rule, as shown in Fig. 1, and the rule when in a horizontal position may at that time be employed as a level, and the length of the link 12 is also such as to admit of the casing being carried over upon the end of the rule adjacent to which the attachment is placed, so that the rule when held in avertical position maybe usedfor plumbing a given surface.
The attachment will rest on that end of the folded rule opposite the end provided with the knuckle-hinges 13. Therefore the attachment when at rest on the end of the rule will be in a measure supported at the back by the central or disk hinge 14 of the rule.
I desire it to be understood that two links 12 may be used, if desired, one being pivoted ateach side of the member of the rule to which the attachment is to be applied. The normal position of the attachment is at the end of the rule, as shown in Fig. 2, since when I so placed the rule may be carried in the pocket as readily with the attachment as without.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A folding rule provided with a levelglass pi votally connected thereto to swing into engagement with the edge of the rule or the end thereof, the said glass being of a length equal to the width of the rule, whereby the glass when swung upon the end of the rule will not interfere with the rule being carried in the pocket, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination with a folding rule, of a casing of a length equal to the combined width of the members of the rule, a levelglass in the casing, and a link pivoted to one member of the rule near its end and to the casing at about the center of its length, substantially as herein shown and described.
