COMBINED SQUARE, LEVEL, .AND COMPASS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 2'7, 1915.
Application filed July 13, 1914. Serial ITO/850,710.
Squares, Levels, and Compasses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to combined squares, levels and compasses, and one of the principal objects of the invention is to provide a tool of compact form which can be quickly converted from a square and level to a compass and which can be folded within a small space when not required for use. The above and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a combined square, level and compass, made in accordance with this invention and shown folded, Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the device when opened out for use as a square, Fig. 4 is a side elevation showing the parts opened out to be used as a level or as a rule, Fig. 5 is a sectional view at one of the joints and showing a latch for holding the parts in a proper position, Fig. 6 is a similar view showing the latch retracted and disposed in a recess, Fig. 7 is a similar view of the other latch used for holding the parts in their proper relative positions, and Fig. 8 is a detail sectional view showing one of the compass points. 7
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the main member of the square provided with an angular flange or head 2, said members 1 and 2 forming practically an L in cross section, as shown more clearly in Fig. 2. The companion member 3 is substantially L-shape in cross section, and is provided with an angular portion 4. An extension 5 is pivoted at 7 to the member 4 and a tri-square member 6 is pivoted at 8' to the member 1. For holding the members 4 and 6 in an extended position, a latch 9 is pivoted to the member 4 in a recess 10, and said latch is provided with a nose 11 and is pivoted at 12 in said recess. A spiral spring 13 bears upward against the opposite end of the latch, and normally holds the nose 11 within the latch. A screw 14, however, may be screwed down to force the nose lloutward into the recess 15 in the member 5 for holding the parts extended. A spirit level 16 is mounted in the member 3 and a similar level 14 is mounted in the member 4.
The members 1 and 3 are connected together by a pivot 18 and for holding saidmembers in extended position a suitable latch 19 is pivoted at 20 in a recess 21 in the member 4, said latch having a nose 22 adapted to project into a recess 23 in the member 1. The opposite end of the latch 19 is provided with a circular recess 24 and a spirit level 25 is mounted underneath the said recess. A screw 26 is inserted through the ring portion of thelatch 19 and a spiral spring 27 surrounds the screw and normally holds the nose 22 within the recess 21. When the screw 26 is turned into the member 4, the nose 22 is projected into the notch 23 in the member 1.
Mounted in the ends of each of the members 5 and 6 is a compass point 28, mounted to slide in a recess 29 and provided with a binding screw 30, the shank of which extends through a slot 31. When the tool is opened out it may be used as a compass, in which the two elements are pivoted at the point 18. 7
From the foregoing it will be obvious that the tool may be readily opened out to be used as a square, as a level, or the points 28 may be extended to provide an efficient compass.
The tool is simple in construction, can be manufactured at low cost, and is very eificient for its purpose.
Various changes may be made in the die tails of construction without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the claim.
What is claimed is z- A combined square and level comprising two members of L-shape in cross section pivotally connected together at one of their ends, and provided with recesses, extens ions pivoted to said members at their free ends, latches for holding the members in extended position, said latches comprising pivoted members having projecting portions to adapted to be inclosed between the L-shape ARTHUR RUDOLPH, members when folded. SADIE RUDOLPH.
In testimony whereof I afii n presence of two witnesses.
BARNET RUDOLFF.
