COMBINED RULE AND SQUARE.
Application filed March 20, 1915.
tachment is secured, such that one of the sections of the rule upon being unfolded may be accurately positioned at a right angle or other desired angle to another section of rule. In our preferred construction,
what we may term the first and second sections of the rule are pivotally connectedat their adjacent ends by a diagonally disposed hinge, the adjacent ends of these sections being correspondingly mitered so that the second section when folded lies upon and parallel to the first section and when extended lies at a right angle to and in the same plane as the first section. A small metallic plate is secured to the lower face of the first section adjacent to the hinge, this plate having a right angledextension at one side of the first section upon which the second section lies andis supported when extended. A flange is struck up from the i l edge of the angular extension of this plate in position to coact with the edge of the second section of the rule when extended. In the preferred construction, this flange is at a right angle to the edge of the first section of the rule and the second section of the rule when extended is pressed firmly against the same so that the edges of the first and second sections make an accurate right angle witheach other, the hinge between the sec- 1 tions in this case lying at an angle of fortyfive degrees to the outer edge of the first section. Or, if desired, the hinge may be mounted at a different angle to the rule sections and the extension of the plate with the flangethereon mounted at a corresponding angle to coact with the second section in a similar manner when the latter 18 extended tomake a desired angle with the first section different from a right angle. preferably, the rule is provided with. a third section which is hinged in the usual manner to the first section at the end thereof opposite to that at which the hinge between the first and second sections is mounted, this third section being adapted to swing in a plane parallel to the face of the first section into parallel relation to the first section when folded and away from the same through angles up to one hundred and eighty degrees, when extended. When the rule is folded with the second section upon the face of the first section and the third section beside the first section, the end of the third section rests upon the angular extension of the plate secured to the first section, the end of the third section then being hehind the fiange on the plate. When the rule 1s extended, the third section being swung out of the way, the second section is sup ported by the angular extension of the plate with its edge contacting and being alined by the flange on the plate as stated.
In order that a clearer understanding of our invention may be had, attention is hereby directed to the accompanying drawings forming part of this application and illustrating certain embodiments of our invention. Y
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a plan view of a three section rule in extended position with the second section at a right angle to the first section, Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same rule in folded position, Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1, Fig. 4 is an enlarged partial plan view of the end of the second section folded back upon the first section and showing the plate secured to the bottom face of the first section, Fig. 5 is an end view of the rule viewed from the left in Fig. 1 with the second section extended at right angles to the first and Fig. 6 is an enlarged bottom plan view of the plate referredto with the adjacent portions of the first and second sections of the rule mounted at right angles thereon.
Referring to the drawings, the rule illustrated comprises the first, second and third sections, mounted on pivot pin 4 and movable between disks 5, so that section 3 may be extended into line with section 1, as shown in Fig. 1, or swung through one hundred and eighty degrees to lie parallel with and beside section 1, as shown in Fig. 2.
Sections 1 and 2 are secured together by a hinge construction 6 mounted at an angle of forty-five degrees to the outer edge 7 of section 1, the adjacent ends of sections 1 and 2 being correspondingly mitered at an angle of forty-five degrees as shown at 8. The hinge 6 comprises a pivot pin 9, the axis of which is in about the plane of the top face of section 1, and movable disks mounted upon pin 9 between cars 10, some of said movable disks having extensions 11 secured to section 2 and the other of said disks having extensions 12 secured to section 1 in the usual manner. Thus section 2 may be folded back upon the face of section 1, as shown in Fig. 2, or extended at a right angle, in the same plane as section 1, as shown inFig. 1. l
The plate 13 is secured to the bottom face of section 1 of the rule, adjacent to and be-,
neath hinge 6. This plate comprises a portion 14 parallel to the rule 1 upon which it is mounted, and a right angular extension 15 extending to one side of the portion 1-1. Flange 16 is struck upwardly from the edge of the angular extension 15 of the plate, this flange lying at a right-angle to the outer edge 7 of section 1. When the rule is in closed position, as shown in Fig. 2, the end of section 3 rests upon the angular portion 15 of the plate so that strain is thereby taken off the pivotal mounting 4, 5 between sections 1 and 3, flange 16 then being parallel to the end of section 3 butremoved therefrom a slight distance to permit section 3 being swung away from section 1 and off of plate 13 without striking the flange 16. When section 3 has been moved out of the way and section 2 unfolded, section 2 will lie upon and be supported by the angular extension 15. of plate 13, thus taking the strain off of the hinge 6. Flange 16 on the plate also coacts with the outer edge of section 2 when the latter is extended, the outer edge of section 2 being preferably slightly recessed as shown at 17 adjacent its end, the flange 16 fitting within recess 17 when the section 2 is extended. The provision of flange 16 makes it certain that section 2 will always form an accurate right angle with section 1 when extended, thus preventing any inaccuracy which might result from av slight movement of the hinge 6 whcn'the device is used as a square. The outer edges of plate 13 also provide hardened'and accurate right angled straight edges at the corner of the square to aid in the accurate use of the device as a square.
Having now described our invention, what we claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent is as follows:
1. In a rule, the combination of'a plurality of rule sections, pivotally secured together to fold into parallel relation, the second on the first and the third beside the first, said second section, when opened, being adapted to lie at an angle to said first section, and means secured to said first section adapted to provide a straight edge at an flat rule sections having mitered ends, a 5
hinge connecting said ends of said sections, having its axis parallel to the facesof said sections and parallel to said mitered ends, so that the second section may be folded parallel to and flat upon, or opened out at a desired angle to, the first section, and a plate secured to a. face of said first section, extending from one side of sald section to afford a support for a face of said second section when opened, said plate having a 1,-
flange adapted to contact a'longitudinaledge of said second section when the latter is opened, to position said second section at an accurate desired angle'to said first section, substantially as set forth. v
3. In a rule, the combination of a pair 0 flat rule sections having mitered ends, a hinge connecting said ends of said sections, having its axis parallel to the facesof said sections and arranged at substantially an angle of 15 degrees to the outerlongitudinal edge of the first section, so that the second section may be folded vparallel to and fiat upon, or opened out at a right angle to, the first section, and a plate secured to the ,bottom face of said first section, having an upwardly-extending flange extending at right angles to'the-outer edge of the-first section, adapted to contact. the outer longitudinal edge of said second section'when opened, to accurately positlonthe sameata 1 right angle to said first section, substantially as set forth. 7 V 4:. In a rule, the combination of apair of rule sections, a diagonally-disposed hinge connecting said sections, so disposed that the second section may be folded parallel to and upon, or opened out at a right angle is mounted, adapted to swing in a plane 7 This specification signed and witnessed parallel to the faces of said first section, into this 15th day of March, 1915.
parallel relation to said first section or away PHILLIP E. HARTH. therefrom, the end of said third section, WALTER SCHAUER. 5 when in folded position, resting on said Witnesses: plate adjacent to said flange, substantially NELLIE B. OSTERHOUT,
