LEE D. CRAIG, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR TO SQUARE RULE COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF CALIFORNIA.
COMBINED FOLDING RULE AND SQUARE.
Application filed March 24, 1913.
1 '0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Lin: D. CRAIG, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco and State 01 California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Folding Rules and Squares, of which the following is a specification.
The hereinafter described invention re lates to improvements in folding rules, pan ticularly to that type of rule employed by carpenters or the like, and the invention has tor its principal objects to provide a rule of the above type which is capable of being readily converted from a rule into a square to assist in scribing line across a piece oi material at right angles to the side edge thereof; to provide a rule so constructed as to be folded to form a right angle having two straight edges thus dispensing with the necessity of a arpenter carrying a separate rule and square.
ith the above mentioned and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended; it being understood that minor changes within the scope of the claims hereto appended may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention.
To more fully comprehend the invention. reference should be had to the accompanying drawings in whicl1 Figure 1 is a view of my improved rule in folded position in side elevation. Fig. 2 is an edge view with one of the end foldable sections in partly open position, disclosing the quadrant shaped lug carried atthe joint between the main foldable sections. Fig. 3 is a view in elevation of the side opposite the one shown in Fig. 1 of my improved rule when used as a square. Fig. 1 is a view in perspective with the end toldable sections in partly open position, disclosing the joint connecting the main foldable sections and the quadrant shaped lug secured thereto.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, wherein like numerals 01" reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views; the numerals 1 and 1 designate the main foldable sections of the rule, which are hinged together at one end by the usual form of rulejoint, comprising an out- Specification of Letters Patent.
llatented. Feb. 24:. 1914.
Serial No. 756,396.
Secured to the outer face oft one of the' cars 0 is a quadrant shaped limiting lug 7, the face 8 of which normally abuts against the end of the loldable end section (3, and the face 9 of said quadrant shaped lug is adapted, when the main rule sections 1 and 1 are pivoted at right angles to each other, as in Fig. to abut against the free end of the foldable end section 5, should the same be in its folded position, and the rule sections when in this position forming a true square, as in Fig. 3. A portion or? the tongue 2 and ears respectively cut away, as at 10 and 11, to provide a true right angle corner at the pivotal joint of the main rule sections 1 and 1, when the same are in the position as shown in Fig. 3.
lVhen it is desired to extend the rule to its full length with the main rule sections 1 and 1 in alinement with each other, it is only necessary to raise the end. rule section 5, which will permit the face 9 of the quadrant shaped lug 7 to pass the end of the end section 5 and to swing with the ear to which the same is secured.
It will be observed that in my invention 1 have provided a rule with a simple attachment which enables the same to he used as a square.
Having thus described my invention what 1 claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is 1. In a folding rule of the class described, the combination with a pair of main rule members, a hinge connecting said rule members at one end, said hinge permitting movement of said main rule members in alinement with each other and also permitting movement of said main rule members to a position parallel with each other, end rule members hinged to the free end of each of said main rule members and capable of folding thereon, and a lug carried by said first mentioned. hinge and having av stop face exposed for contact with the free end of one of said end rule members when the same is in its folded position on the main rule member, and the latter is swung away from the other main rule member, to limit the movement of the main rule sections intermediate the first two mentioned positions.
2. In a folding rule of the class described, the combination. with a pair of main rule members, a hinge connecting said rule members at one end, said hinge permitting movement of said main rule members in alinement with each other and also permitting movement of said main rule members to a position parallel with each other, end rule members hinged to the free end of each of said main rule members and capable of folding thereon, and a lug carried by said first mentioned hinge and having a stop face exposed for contact with the free end of one of said end rule members when the same is in its folded position on the main rule member, and the latter is swung away from the other main rule member, and a face exposed to abut with the end of the other of said end rule member when in its folded position, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
