RULE.
APPLICATION FILED JN.13. 1906.
UNITED STATES TENT OFFTOE.
Speccation of Letters Patent.
Patented April 17, 1906.
Application filed January 13, 1906. Serial No. 295,971.
To @ZZ whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, ORANGE E. WYcoFF, a citizen of the United States, residing at Winfield, in the county of Cowley and State of Kansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rules, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to carpenters rules, the object of the invention being to provide a combined rule and try-square'for the use of carpenters and other mechanics in laying off their work, the arrangement of parts being such that when the rule is unfolded and the arms thereof swung outward away from each other they will be arrested when they reach a point exactly at right angles to each other and be locked in such position, the device then forming an accurate try-square. The construction hereinafter described permits the rule to be adjusted outward to its full length and also permits the arms thereof to be adjusted to any desired relative angle.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described, illustrated, and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a plan view of a combination rule and trysquare embodying the present invention, showing the device adapted for use as a trys uare. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the rule w en completely folded. Fig. 3 is a plan view illustrating the manner in which the rule is completely extended. Fig. 4 is a detail section showing the connection between the brace members and the rule-arms.
Like reference-numerals designate corresponding parts in all the gures of the drawings,
Referring to the drawings, I have therein shown an ordinary carpenters rule embodying the graduated arms 1 and 2, connected by the usual rule-joint 3, and the arms being further jointed, as shown at 4, to enable the rule to be folded compactly, as shown in Fig. 2, the parts and arrangement thus far described being ofthe familiar form.
In carrying out the present invention I provide a folding brace embodying separable members 4 and 5, composed of thin strips of metal, the member 4 being pivotally connected at 6 to one of the arms of the rule, while the member 5 is pivotally connected at 7 to the other arm of the rule, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. The pivots 6 and 7 are equidistant from the pivot 3 of the main oint, so that the members 4 and 5 when brought into longitudinal alinement with each other form a straight brace which extends at an angle of forty-five degrees across the angle between the arms 1 and 2 of the rule.
The inner extremity of one of the brace members is provided with a pin or stud 8, and the inner end of the other brace member is provided with a notch consisting of an oblique slot 9, adapted to receive the pin or stud 8, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the construction and arrangement also permitting the pin or stud 8 to be moved out of engagement with the pin or notch 9 for separating the brace members and allowing the brace members of the rule to be swung into longitudinal alinement with each other, as shown in Fig. 3, and also to permit the said arms to be adjusted to any desired angle with relation to each other.
Under the arrangement of brace members shown and described when the rule is unfolded andvthe arms l and 2 thereof swung away from each other the brace straightens out until the members thereof occupy a position in longitudinal alinement with each other and arrest the further movement of the rule-arms and hold the same at right angles to each other, thereby forming an accurate and reliable try-square.
Having thus described the invention, I claim- A rule comprising a pair of arms having a jointed connection, in combination with a folding and separable brace consisting of two members having their outer ends pivotally connected to the arms of the rule, the inner end of one of said arms being provided with a pin or stud and the inner end of the other member being provided with a notch to receive and retain said pin or stud, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
