SQUARE-RULE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J une 2, 1914.
Appncanon fried August 1e, 1912. serial No. 715,925.
To all whom 'it may concern.'
Be it known that I, PAUL Finn) Haase, oi' 1125 Paseo, Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and the State ot lvlissouri, have invented a new and useful Device to be Known as a Square-Rule; and I do hereby declare that the following is a tull, clear, and exact description ot the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, 'forming partthereof.
My invention relates to folding rules, and has tor its principal object to provide a device ot that type which is adapted ttor use as either a straight edge or a square.
ln a general way, the invention consists ot providing` a rule ot the ordinary jointed type with a special joint, the adjacent end portions of which are beveled so that when one ot the specially ointed sections is turned past center it will cooperate with its mating section to torni a right angle or square rule, the invention consisting more particularly in the detailed construction of the joint whereby the square forming sections are connected.
The preferred torni and construction oit the rule, and thc novel construction oi the joint, are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein,
Figure I is a perspective view ot a square rule constructed according to my invention, showing the parts inv condensed arrangement. Fig. ll is a perspective view of the rule, showing the sections partly spread. Fig. lll is an elevation ol" the rule, shmving the sections arranged to torni a square. Fig. lV an edge Vview ot the square joint. Fig, 'V is a detail view ot the stpiare joint parts, showing their relation when the rule is in the position illustrated in Fig. l.
teferring more in detail to the parts: l designates the rule sections, each ot which is coiistructed in the ordinary manner, eX- ceptfor the improven'ients hereinafter mentioned, the bodv ot the sections being usually formed ot wood and marked otl 'tor inches and fractions ot inches, and the better constructions being provided with metal edge strips and tips.
One of the inner sections 2 ot the rule is rabbeted at its outer end and carries hinge 'plates 3, the outer faces ot which lie in the saine plane as the taces in the rule section and bear the inch graduations 'tor that partoit the section which they cover, the ends of the hinge plates being extended beyond the ends of the rule section and provided with disks 4 which are offset il'rom one edge in order to properly .mount the mating hinge parts as will presently be described, and the opposite edge ol the plate being beveled, as shown at The end ci the rule section 2 contained between the plates 3 is cupped, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. l, to provide a pocket within which the hinge member ot the adjacent section may rotate.
On the end section G, which is adapted tor cooperation with the section 2 to torni the square, are plates T which are also countersunk into the sides of the rule section, as are the plates 3 on the section 2, and bear the inch gradnations for the parts of that rule section which they cover. The section G, however, does not extend the full length of the hinge plates, but terminates a short distance troni the outer ends thereof to leave a socket between the projecting ends of the plates into which thc inner ends ot' the inserts l0 may project. The plates 'T have no disks corresponding with the disks 4.- of sections 3, their end portions being shaped to provide the sockets 9 which are adapted tor receiving the edges ot the disks 4 when the parts are assembled.
The hinge inei'nbers on the end rule section G comprise inserts l0, the heads vl1 ot' which are contained between and riveted to the projecting ends oit the plates 'T and abut against the ends oit the body oit section 6, each head having a disk l2 thereon of the saine diameter, and corresponding to the disks 4f on sections 3, the disks being otlset similarly but oppositely to the first disks 4:, and the edges ot the head ll being beveled at 13 to correspond with the bevel oi the hinge plates on the section Q, so that when the beveled edges abut the rule sections will torni a true square, as illustrated in Fig. lll.
Vv'ith the hinge meinliers on the section (i toi-ined separately as described, with the d isk heads containeifl between the plates T, the disks l2 may be contained between the disks 4;. so that when a pin let is extended therethrough the parts may pivot relatively to each other, as with any o'l the other hinges, the only ditterence being that by ot`f setting the disksand beveling the parts, at the ends et' the separate rule sections, the end sec-tions may turn vpast a center and to a right angle with the section 2, so that the rule may be used as a square when so ai ranged.y ,lt is apparent that with this corr struction all ofthe parts are of the saine thickness so that there are no projecting edges from either the bodies of' the rule section or from the hinge part-s.
Having thus described my invention, what I I claiin as new therein7 and desire to secure byx LettersfPatent, is
The combination With two rule sections, of plates fixed to opposite sides and projectingfromtlie end of one of said sections, the projecting ends of said plates being beveled atone edge and provided with apertured disk portions, plates fixed to and projecting from the end of the second rule section,
j hinge members located between the projecting ends of said last nanied plates and haringl disks contained by and pivotally connected with the disk portions of the plates i on the first sectie-n7 the ends of the plates and the contained portions of the hinge inenibers of the second section being beveled to cooperate with the beveled parts of the first section to forni a square, substantiallyv as setforth.
