taken looking in the direction 0f the little arrows at the ends of the section lines.
Referring to the drawing, the main body 0f my improved combination tool is preferably made up 0f a pair of metal side plates l, l, between Which are arranged the spacing plateS 2 and 3. hese spacing plates and superimposecl To all wlz0m z't may concern: 4 Be it known that I, SAMUEL W. DU MOUCI;IEL, a citizen of the United States, resicling at the city 0f Kalamazoo, in the county of Kalamazoo and State of Michigan, have inventecl a new and useful COInbination-Tool, of Whieh the following is the specification.
This invention combination tool.
The main objects of this invention are to provicle a combination t0ol which is readily adjusted for use as a square, level, plumb, six-footpole, 01 as a hinge gage.
Furt-her objects, and objects relating to structural cletails, Will definitely appear from the cletailed clescription t0 follow.
I accomplish the objects 0f my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The structure described constitutes one effective embodiment of my invention. Other embodiments could be readily devised by those skillecl in the art.
The invention is clearly definecl and pointed out in the claims.
A structure constituting an efiective and preferred embodiment of the features 01 my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this speeification, in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a structure emboclying the features of my invention, with one of the arms extended at right angles to the main body and the other extended into alinement therewith. Fig. 2 is a plan view, with the arms partially collapsed, a ortion of one of the side plates being broken away to better show the arrangements of the parts. Fig. 3 is a front edge view of my improved combination t001 collapsed. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail seetion taken on a line corresponding 130 line 4-4 of Fig. 3. F ig. 5 is an enlarged transverse section taken on a line corresponding to line 5-5 of Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is an enlarged transverse secti0n taken on a line corresponding to line 66 of Fig. 3. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the spacing plate 2. Fig. 8 is a perspeccive view of the spacing plate 3. Fig. 9 is an enlarged detail, through the hinge gage, taken on a line corresponding to line 99 of Fig. 1. Fig. 10 is a perspective view 0f the hinge gage.
In the drawings, similar reference characters refer tdsimilar arts throughoutthe several views, and the sectional views are relates t0 an improved the spaeing plates and the side plates to gether are not here illustrated as they Will be reaclily unclerstoocl. The side plates and the spacing plates are provicled with registering holes 4 and 5, in Which are respectively arrangecl the plumb glass o1 bulb 6, and the level glass or bulb 7. The rear edges 0f the side plates and spacing plates are arranged in the same plane, as are also their ends. At the ends of the bocly, I pivot the bladelike arms 01 exj:ensions 8 and 9. These arme are also formed of metal and are adaptecl to be folde l 0r collapsed between the sicle plates in front ofthe spacing plates, the anns being disposecl oppositely relative to the spacing plates. The pivots 10'f01' the arme are provided With nuts 11 so that the arms may be clamped in their adjusted positions. When the arms are extended into alinement with the body, their rear edges are in the plane of the rear edge of the bocly. When they are extended ab rightangles to thebody, their rear edges are in the plane of the ends of the body. The rear eclge and ende of the body and the rear edges of the arn1s are provided with scale indicia, Which is illustrated in conventional form in the drawing. In the structure illustrated, the arms and body, When extended, form a six-foot measure, er When the arme are extende cl at right angles, they form a square. By providing the level and plumb glasses, the tool may be usecl as a square, level, plumb er six-foot Ineasure, and I also preferably provide in this connection, a gage 12 which is slotted a1: 13 to be slipped over the eclge of one 0f the arme, and is acljustably secured upon the arms bymeans of the set screw 14. The tool may, Wit-h this attatzhment, be used as a gage f0r setting C1001 hinges. The arms may be adjusted and secured ab -any angle, so that the tool can be used as a t-ry-square, if desired.
My improved tool is comparatively sim ple and economical in structure, and is very up'on each other. The means for connecting= fiation in structural details.
convenient in use. I hzwe illustrated und. dcscribed the summe in detail in the form preferred by me, although 1 am aware that my invention is capable 0f considerable VE- provided with sca1-e indicia, ancl longitudinally und transversely disposed gage bu1bs ar1anged. in regis'tering openings in said sicle and spac'mg plates.
2. A conmbination t001 comprising a body consisting of s'1de plates and a pa'1r 0f interp0sed spacing p1ates, the spacing p1ates be- '1ng shorter than the s'1de p1ates and being 0f substantially one-half the width thereof except their oute1 ends which are 0f Substant'1ally the Width of the side plates, said spacing plates be'1ng oppositely disposed, and a pair of blad-elike arms 0f substantially 011ehalf the width o:f sa'1d side p1ates and having pivot portions 0f substantially the width 0f said sich: plates disposed between the side plates und ehe adjacent spacing plate at the inner end of the other spacing plate t0 f0ld oppositely between saicl side plates in front 0f sa'1d spacing plates; and pivots f01. said arms arranged through said s'1de and spncing p1ates said p'1vots being provided With clamping nuts whereby sa1d arms may be secured in thei1 adjusted positi0ns, the max edges of said arms und at least 0ne of said main body plutes being provided with sca1e ind'1cia.
SAMUEL YV. DU MOUCHEL. Witnesses VVM. L. FI'IZGERALD, CAREY J. GOLF).
Having thus described my inventionwhat I clai1n as new und desi1e t0 secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A combination t001 comprising a body consisting of side plates und a pair of interposed spacing p1ates, the spacing plates being Shorter than the s'1de plates and being 0f substantially onehalf the Width thereof except their outer ends which are 0f substantially the width of the side p1ates, said spacing plates being oppositely disposecl, said side p1ates and spacing plates being pro-- vided wit-h centrally registering openings, und a pair 01 blad-e-like arms of substantia1ly one-half the width 0f snid side plates und having pivot portions 0f substantially the width of said side p1ates disposed between the side p1ates und the adjacent spac '1ng plate at the immer endof t-he other spacing plate to fo1d oppositely bet-ween said side plates in f1ont of sa'1d spac'mg plates; and pivots f01 said a1ms arranged through said side and spacing plates sa'1cl pivots being provided With clamping nuts whereby sa'1d arms may be secured im the'1r adjusted positions, the rea1' edges 0f said arms and ab least- 0ne 0:E said rnain body plates being Gopies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, D. C.
