APPLICATION FILED APR. 4, I916 Patented Dec. '5, I916.
SAMUEL ROWLAND PARKES, 0F WILLENHALL, ENGLAND.
HANDLE FOB, LA'IGI-IES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 5, I916.
Application filed Apri14, 1916. Serial No. 88,882.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL ROWLAND PARKES, of Pretoria Works, New Road, Willenhall, in the county of Stafi'ord, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Handles for Latches; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention comprises improvements in handles for latches of the Norfolk or Suffolk type, and refers to that class of such which are manufactured from sheet metal, the object of the present invention being to provide an improved handle of this kind.
According to this invention the supporting member for the thumb bit is pressed up in an improved manner to a channel section thus giving increased strength and rigidity.
Referring to the drawings :F.igure 1. illustrates an elevation of a handle according to this invention. Fig. 2. is a section at A, A in Fig. 1. Fig. 3. is a'section at B, B in Fig. 1. Fig. 4. is a section at C, C in Fig. 1. Fig. 5. illustrates the blank from which the handle is made.
In carrying my invention into practice as illustrated upon the accompanying drawings a blank 0; of the form shown in Fig. 5 is taken which is bent to the form shown in Fig. 1 so as to provide the handle portion 1) with the two attachment and plate portions 0 which are provided with screw holes where by they may be secured to the door. by screws as (Z. It will be seen from the section in Fig. 2 that the sheet metal blank is folded to a tubular form, sheet metal handles of this-kind being extremely cheap to manufacture and light in weight.
In accordance with this invention from the blank I press up a part marked 6 which is pierced with a hole 0 for accommodating the thumb bit 7", this part being of channel. section there being thus a connecting part between the sides or lug portions 6 which are provided with holes 6 for carrying the rivet upon which the thumb bit is pivotally mounted.
What I claim then is 1. In a handle for latches of the type specified and pressed from a sheet metal blank, a thumb bit supporting part pressed from the blank to a channel section, for the purpose specified and substantially as set forth.
2. In a handle for latches of the type specified and pressed from a sheet metal blank, the combination of a handle portion proper; attachment portions for mounting the handle, a thumb bit supporting member pressed up from one attachment member to a channel section, and a thumb bit supported by said member, for the purpose specified and substantially as set forth.
3. In a handle for latches of the type specified and pressed from a sheet metal blank, a means for pivotally supporting the thumb bit comprising a pair of side wings or members and a connecting bridge piece or tie between said wings; all pressed from the sheet metal blank and substantially as set forth.
I11 testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
SAMUEL ROWLAND PARKES.
