J. BRANDT COMBINED LVEL, PLUME, AND MARKING DEVICE Filed August 29, 1925 .Sw ./an Brandlfvm ATTORNEY Patented Nov. 2, 192e.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN BRANDT, OF BLAIR, NEBRASKA.
COMBINED LEVEL, PLUMB, AND MARKING DEVICE.
Application led August 29, 1925. Serial No. 53,373.
This invention relates to an attachment for a square, the general object of the invention being to provide means whereby a plumbbob can be used with the square.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for holding the square in upright position.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter' fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying rawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is an elevation showing the invention in use.
Figure 2 is a section on line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an end view of the supporting member.
Figure l1 is a section on line 4 4 of Figure 1.
1 indicates a base piece which is provided with the feet 2 for resting upon the work piece or other support and which has the slotted projection 3 through the slot of which passes one arm of the square A. A small slotted projection 4t is arranged at the bottom of the base, the slot in which receives one edge of the square. A set screw 5 is carried by the part 3 for clamping the device to the square. The upper part of the base 1 is flat, as shown at 6 and is provided with a center line 7 for the plumb-bob 8, the string 9 of which being fastened to a member 10 which is slotted to receive the square and which is clamped to the square by a set screw l1. This member 10 is provided with an enlarged part having a flat face,4 as shownat 12, for engaging a part of the structurel From the foregoing, it will be seen that the member 1 will hold the square A in up* right position and will also space it from the vertical part of the structure B as will the member 10. The parts are held in adjusted position on the square by the set screws and the bob 8 in conjunction with the line 7 will indicate when the parts of the structure are square. If desired, a spirit level can be attached to the horizontal part of the square.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended rlaim.
l/Vhat I claim is An attachment for a square comprising upper and lower members, each having a slotted projection for receiving parts of a square, a set screw in each projection for clamping the member to thel square, the lower member having feet thereon for engaging a support with a slot in the rear part` thereof for receiving a part of the square, the upper part ofthe lower member being fiat with a mark on its upper face and a plumb bob carried by the upper member and swigging over said mark, the outer faces of the members forming straight edges.
In testimony whereof I atriX my signature.
JOHN BRANDT.
