Description

W. F. PUNTE' DISPENSING CAN June 12, 1934.
Filed March 16, 1933 Patented June 12, 1934 PATENT OFFICE DISPENSING CAN William F. Punte, Syracuse, N. Y., assignor to Continental Can Company, Inc., New York, N Y., a corporation of New York Application March 16, 1933, Serial No. 661,159
2 Claims. (Cl. 221--98) The invention relates to new and useful improvements in a dispensing can, and more particularly a can for dispensing powdered material in measured amounts.
An object of the invention is to provide a dispensing can having an opening therein through which the contents are dispensed, with a means serving as a cover for said opening and also as a measuring means for dispensing a measured amount of material.
A further object of the invention is to provide a can of the above type with a slip closure therefor which servesto hold the cover in closed position when the closure isapplied to the can.
In the drawing-- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a can embodying the improvements, showing the closure separated from the can and the measuring cover turned to open position whereby a measured amount of material is dispensed from the can;
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view through the can with the cover closed and the closure in place holding the same in closed position;
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view through the can showing the closure removed and the cover in raised position, and
Fig. 4 is a detail in plan showing the can end in the region of the opening therethrough.
The can includes a body portion to which the bottom end is secured preferably by doubleseaming. A top end is secured to the body portion by soldering or in any other suitable way, but said top end is so constructed as to provide a slight depression in the top end of the can. This top end of the can has an opening therethrough which is closed by a cover hinged to the top end so that it may be swung to a right angle position relative thereto when in full open position. Associated with the cover are side walls and an inner covering member which closes the opening when the outer covering member is moved to open position. Between the two covering members and the side walls is a measuring compartment, enabling one using the can to swing the cover and thereby remove from the can a measured amount of material. There is a slip closure adapted to engage the end of the can and completely house this dispensing cover. The closure is also provided with means which bears against the cover when in closed position for holding it tightly closed so as to prevent the escape of material through the opening in the can top during the handling of the can.
Referring more in detail to the drawing, the improved can includes a body portion 1 to which a bottom end is secured by a double seam 2. A can top 3 provided with an upstanding flange 4 is inserted in the open end of the can. This flange,
as shown, is secured to the edge of the can wall by solder bonding material indicated at 5. The CD can top may be seamed to the body portion, if desired. It is'formed as shown in the drawing,
so that a slip closure 6 having a depending flange '7 may be slipped on to the can for completely housing and closing the top end 3. The body of the can is provided with a bead 8 which is just below the edge of the closure when the closure is in place on the can.-
The can top 3 is provided with an opening 9 through which the material in the can is dispensed. This opening 9 is closed by an outer cover member 10. Associated with this outer covor member is an inner cover member 11. These cover members are formed from a metal blank which is provided with a slot, which forms an opening 12 at the meeting edges of the cover members when they are placed at right angles to each other. A tongue 13 on the top end projects through this opening and there are slots 14, 14 at the side edges of the tongue to receive the side Walls 15, 15 which are associated with the two cover members. The cover member 10 is formed integral with these side walls 15. The metal in the blank is folded back and thence at right angles to the cover member 10 in order to provide flanges 16, 16 which overlie the side walls of the opening 9 when the cover member 10 is in closed position. The cover member 11 is folded back so as to provide flanges 1'7, 17 overlying the edges of the opening 9 when the cover member 11 is in closed position. These side walls 15, 15 engage the cover member 11 at the inner edge of these flanges and is preferably secured by solder bonding the same to the cover member. This forms a compartment for dispensing the measured amount of material from the can. If the can is placed in the position shown in Fig.
1, and then the cover member 10 swung to its open position, as indicated, the cover member 11 will trap and carry with it, as it swings to closed position, the material bearing against the cover member 10 and lying between the side walls 15, 15. The top is provided with slots 18, 18 at the opposite side of the opening 9 from the slots 14, 14, and the side walls engage these slots 18, 18. These side Walls run in these slots, and this serves as a means for holding the two covers so that they swing about a substantially fixed axis at the base of the tongue 13. The cover member 10 is provided with a projecting portion 19 which overlies a depression 20 in the can top 3, so as to facilitate the insertion of the operators finger for swinging the cover to open position. When the cover member 10 is in closed position, it contacts with the outer face of the can end all the way around the opening 9, and completely closes the same. The outer slip closure 6 is provided with two depressions 21 and 22 which form rounded members on the inner face of the closure. These projections are so dimensioned that when the cover is slipped on to the can to the position shown in Fig. 2, one of the projections will contact with the cover member 10 and hold the same in closed position, preventing any spilling of the contents of the can from beneath the cover 10 during the handling of the can. Two depressions are formed so that the closure may be placed on the can regardless of the location of the depressions, and either the depression 21 or the depression 22 will be in position to contact with the cover member 10.
The can is preferably filled through the bottom opening} in the body of the can, and then the bottom end is double-seamed thereto. It is dispensed through this measuring compartment associated with the inner and outer cover members 10 and 11, and a measured amount may be dispensed at each time the cover member 10 is swung to open position.
It is obvious that changes in the details of construction and the arrangement of the parts may be made Without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters- Patent, is
1. A can comprising a body portion having a can top secured thereto, said can top having an opening therethrough adjacent one side thereof, inner and outer cover members associated with said opening and disposed substantially at right angles to each other so that when one cover member is closed, the other is wide open, side walls connecting said cover members, means for pivotally supporting the cover members to swing about an axial line at the meeting of the planes of the cover members, each cover member having projecting portions adapted to overlie the can top all the way around the opening when the cover'is in closed position, said can top having a depression therein in which said outer cover member is located, and a slip cover for said can, said slip cover having projections located adjacent opposite ends thereof, one of which is adapted to engage said outer cover member for holding the same firmly in closed position when the slip cover is on the can.
2. A can comprising a body portion having a can top secured thereto, said can top having an opening therethrough, inner and outer cover members associated with said opening and disposed substantially at right angles to each other so that when one cover member is closed, the other is wide open, side Walls connecting said 3130 cover members, means for pivotally supporting the cover members to swing about an axial line at the meeting of the planes I of the cover members, each cover member having projecting portions adapted to overlie the can top all the way around the opening when the cover is in closed position, said can top having a depression therein in which said outer cover member is located, a slip cover for said can, said open-' ing being disposed in said can top adjacent one side thereof and said slip cover having projections located adjacent opposite ends thereof, one of which is adapted to engage said outer cover member for holding the same firmly in closed position when the slip cover is on the can.
