Be it known that I, JOSHUA Greener: SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsoy and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Candy Boxes, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improved candy box and its object is to provide an elastic bedding or cushioning to protect the box and the material within the box during handling or shipment, and to secure this result by means consistent with a strong compact box of neat appearance.

In shipping and handling fragile candy such as chocolate creams, it is desirable not to break or mutilate it. Ordinary boxes now in use do not overcome this defect and the primary object of my invention is to provide a box by the use of which fragile candy can be carried Without danger of breaking from jarring.

In the drawings with which I have illustrated my inventiomFigure 1 is a perspective of a box especially-designed as a candy container, and Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same box.

The above drawings show a candy box A of ordinary proportion which may be varied to suit the purposes of the trade. To this box A is hinged a lid cover B having outside cushioning O, and inside cushioning D opposed to cushioning E in thebottom of the box A. The box A is formed with a bottom plate 2 on which rests a rectangular tray 3 having upturned edges 1. Within the tray 3 stands an inclosing. flange 5 which rises above the edges 1 to increase the depth of the box and receives the lid B. A cushion E in the bottom of the box A is formed of a layer of cotton fiber 6 or other suitable elastic material placed upon the bottom of the tray 3 and covered by a paper envelop 7 which passes over the layer of cotton and upward between the flange 5 and the edges 4 of the tray 3, all of the parts being fastened together by glue or other suitable means.

At the hinge side of the box A, a piece of cloth 8 is fastened between the flange 5 and the upper part of the edge 4, passes out over the edge and is attached to the outside of the downturned rim 9 of the cover tra 10 forming a hinge for the cover B in its movement on the box A. The cushion (J is formed on the upper side of a top plate 12 which is similar to the bottom plate 2 and is attached. to the cover tray 10. A layer of elastic material 17 is placed on the top plate 12 and an envelop 13 is passed over it and fastened between the flexible cover tray 10 and the top plate .12 near its edges. The shape and softness of the cushions D and E may be varied to suit the objects to be carried in the box, to prevent crushing or breakage of fragile material. The cushion C is designed to protect the boxes from each other when packed together and may be on either the top or bottom of the box as is convenient, and may be proportioned to conditions of shipping and the weight of the box.

In accordance with the patent statutes I have described the principles of operationof my invention together with the apparatus which I now consider to represent the best embodiment thereof but 1 desire to have it understood that the constructron shown is only illustrative and that the 111- vention can be carried out by other means and applied to uses other than those aboveset forth within the scope of thefollowing claims.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Lettors Patent is 1. A devicc of the class set forth, compr1sing, in combination, a box container formed of similar upper and lower trays invcrtedly hinged together so that their edges coincide when said box is closed, an inclosingcontinuous flange equal in height to the depth of both trays and secured in said lower tray, a cushion covering the entire bottom of the inside of the lower tray, and an enveloping sheet drawn tightly over said cushion and secured between said inclosing flange and the walls of said lower tray to securely hold said cushion in place.

2. A device of the class set forth, comprising, in combination, a box container formed of similar upper and lower trays invertedly hinged together so that their edges coincide when said box is closed, an malesof similar upper and lower trays invertcdly hinged together so that their edges coincide ,when said box is closed, a cushion secured to the inside of said upper tray by an envelop the edges of which pass around the downturned 1 rim of said tray to protect the same vfrom wear and a projecting plate secured to the outside ofsaid upper tray having a cushion secured thereto. by an envelop the edges of which are embedded between said plate and upper tray to securely hold said cushion.
