UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY A. ROBINSON, OF FOXOROFT, MAINE.
SHOW-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 435,022, dated August 26, 1890.
Application filed April 14, 1890. Serial No. 347,769. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY A. RoBINsoN, of Foxcroft, in the county of Piscataquis and State of Maine, have invented new and useful Improvements in Show-Boxes, of which the following is a specificationQ I I This invention is an improved double-faced show-box for exhibiting bottles of perfumery, medicines, &c., and similar articles, whereby two faces of the same box may be exhibited at the same time at the corner or in any other suitable location on a counter or show-case, each side or face containing the goods desired to be disposed of.
The nature of the invention is fully described below, and illustrated in the accompanyin g drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view representing the box packed for transportation. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the box in position for exhibition with a few bottles in place and with one of the separating partition-slips lying fiat in front. Fig. 3 is a transverse ver tical section of the same. Fig. 4-is a horizontal section on line 00, Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a transverse vertical section showing certain modifications.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
' A A are two shallow coverless boxes of equal size, made of straw-board or other suitable material, with their backs A secured together by rivets a or other suitable means, said boxes being intended to be set on edge, as shownin Figs. 2 and 3. The fastening devices a are placed far enough from the upper edge to allow an advertising-card B to be slipped between the backs of the boxes, as shown in Fig. 2.
C C are bottles intended to be exhibited At the upper port-ion of each compartment a narrow strip of pasteboard D is pasted to the back A for the lips of the bottles to rest against, so that there may be no danger of tipping,
and slots 61 are cut on each side of the neck of each bottle ooincidently through the backs A and strips D. Around the necks of the bottles a ribbon or equivalent device E is passed, preferably as shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 4, one ribbon being used for each side or compartment and passing through the slots d, around the necks of the bottles, and back and forth through the slots and around the necks, its ends being secured at the rear of the backs A of the boxes. Thus each bottle may be removed (by cutting the ribbon) without disturbing any other bottle.
WVhen the box is to be transported, partition-slips II are laid between the bottles, as shown in Fig. 2, and the double box slid into the case or cover I, open at top and bottom, Fig. 1, bands J being used to prevent itfrom slipping out. The show-card B may readily be slipped into the same case. Remove the case 1, bands J, and slips H and adjust the show-card B, and the box is ready for exhibition at a corner or other location on the counter or show-case of a store, both sides plainly showing the goods contained therein. The firmness with which this show-box sets in its position, its compactness, its neatness of appearance, and the comparative immunity of its contents from dust are some of the advantages of its construction.
In Fig. 5 certain modifications are shown. The two backs A are made integral, and lids or flaps K are provided, which can drop and cover the contents or be lifted and-tied together at K, as shown. Of course these lids may receive ornamentation and advertisements on their faces, if desired. A turnedup edge A from the bottom of the box is also provided to meet the lids in case they are not of size to drop to the bottom of the box, such an edge being useful where large or heavy bottles are used.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. Theherein-described double-faced showbox, comprising the coverless boxes A, secured back to back, as shown, their backs being slotted at (1 next the necks of the bottles contained therein, and the ribbon or its mechanical equivalent E securing the bottles in place by being passed in and out of the slots and around the necks of the bottles, substantially as described.
2. The double-faced show-box. A A, constructcd as described, and provided with hinged lids or flaps K, said lids being hinged to the upper edges of the fronts of the double box and adapted to swing vertically and be secured together above the box, as shown, substantially as described.
HENRY A. ROBINSON.
