Description

Patented Doc. 2, I902. J. P. NORTON. PACKAGE BOX FOB STATIONERY.
(Application filed Aug. 30, 1902.)
James 87 ATTOME rs WITNESSES UlTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES PHILLIPS NORTON, OF PORTLAND, CONNECTICUT.
PACKAG E-BOX 'FOR STATIONERY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 715,127, dated December 2, 1902.
Application filed August 30, 1902. Serial No. 121,567. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES PHILLIPS Non- TON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland,in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Package-Boxes for Stationery, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it apper tains to make and use the same.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved package-box for writing-paper and envelops, which consists of a box made of cardboard or other suitable material and provided with a removable cover, one side of the box being secured only at the bottom, so that it may be turned down so as to reveal the contents thereof, said box being also pro vided with a number of supplemental paper or envelop holding cases provided with a flapcover, which is secured to the bottom thereof at one side and which may be turned backwardly, so as to display the contents, a further object being to provide a package-box of the class and'for the purpose specified by means of which paper and envelops may be packed in boxes by means of separate supplemental cases in such a manner that the qual ity or character of the paper or envelops may be seen at all times without removing the paper or envelops from the package-box or from the separate cases containing the same.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in Which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a pack-' age-box made according to my invention, the cover being raised and the folding side of the box proper turned down; and Fig. 2, a similar View of one of the supplemental package paper or envelop cases removed from the box.
In the practice of my invention I provide a package-box of the class specified which comprises the box a and a removable cover 0?, which in the form of construction shown is of the same depth as the box a and which when placed thereon entirelyincloses said box, and the box a, is provided at the front thereof with a folding side member a which is connected with the bottom thereof and which in Fig. 1 of the drawings is shown in a turned-down position. The box CtlS also provided with a plurality of cases I), five of which are shown in Fig. 1 and one of which is shown in Fig. 2, and these cases 1) are rectangular in form and made somewhat on the principle of an envelop, each of said cases being provided with a folding flap or side member N, which is secured to the bottom of the case at one side and which is adapted to be folded over and cover the top thereof, as shown in Fig. 1.
The tops of the cases I) are preferably cutout to form an opening b as shown in Fig. 2, and in practice the paper or envelops are tied together in separate packages 0 by means of the band d and placed in the cases I), as clearly shown in the drawings.
The packages 0 contain a half a quire or a quire or any other suitable amount of paper, as may be desired, and in practice the envelops are put up in the same manner and packed in the same manner, the only difference being that the envelops are preferably placed in larger boxes, so that one of my improved package-boxes will in practice contain any predetermined amount of paper, while a corresponding envelop-box will contain a corresponding number of envelops. This method of packing is not absolutely essential, and the envelops and paper may both be placed in the same box, if desired; but in this event the cases I), which contain the envelops, will be thicker than the cases which contain the paper.
In practice the faces I) of the cases I) are provided with a description of the character or quality of the paper or envelops, as is also the top surface of the flap b and by removing the cover a of the package-box and turning down the folded side a thereof the character of the contents of the cases I) may be seen at a glance, and by turning down the side or flap b of one of the cases bthe paper or envelops contained therein may also be examined and the character or quality thereof predetermined.
By means of myimprovement the paper and envelops may be examined at any time without handling the same, and said paper and envelops are thus kept clean at all times, and
when desired a separate case of paper and a corresponding case of envelops may be re moved and sold separately or the entire box and contents may be sold.
In practice I prefer to pack the paper and envelops in separate boxes, each of which is provided with cases I), in which the paper and envelops are placed in packages, and when desirable a purchaser may take a box of paper and a corresponding box of envelops, as
hereinbefore stated; but it will be apparent that the paper and envelops may be placed in separate cases in the same box, if desired, and it will also be apparent that the package-boxes may be made of any desired size and depth, so as to comply with any use to which the same may be applied.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A stationery-box comprising a box proper having a removable cover and provided with a folding side member which is secured to the bottom thereof, and a plurality of supplemental closed cases placed in said box each of which is provided at one side with a folding member which is secured to the bottom thereof and adapted to be folded over the top thereof, so as to entirely inclose the contents, substantially as shown and described.
2. A stationery-box comprising a box proper having a removable cover and provided with a folding side member which is secured to the bottom thereof, and a plurality of supplemental closed cases placed in said boX each of which is provided at one side with a folding member which is secured to the bottom there of and adapted to be folded over the top thereof, so as to entirely inclose the contents, the tops of the said cases being also open-at the front, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as myinvention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 26th day of August, 1902.
JAMES PHILLIPS NORTON.
