Be it known that I, ALFRED THORNTON RHODES, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county'of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper Boxes or Cartons, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to folding` or knocked-down pasteboard boxes or cartons adapted particularly for mailing books, and other articles, and for casings for packages or mechandise, veither for shipment or when carried in person.

The object of the invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive and efficient means for sealing a box or carton after the same has been folded around an article or package to be mailed, shipped, or carried; in the arrangement of envelops or channels through which the sealing` means may be freely drawn, (to facilitate the tying of the sealing means), and in the arrangement of a paper cover over the back of the box or carton, said cover serving the double purpose of holding the said envelops or channels lin position, and of providing a suitable ink addressing surface to thus prevent the ink from running or spreading, as when written upon pasteboard or other porous surfaces.

The invention consists in providinga folding or knocked-down box or carton of suitable shape, and in the employment of tapes or cords for tying and sealing the box, the said tapes having previously been inclosed or covered with paraffin paper or other suitable material providing an envelop or channel, whereby freely through the envelops or channels, and in the arrangement of a paper cover over the back of the box which is glued or otherwise adhesively secured in place, the said paper cover serving to hold the envelops or channels irmly in positiornand to protect thetapes from the adhesive employed for securing the paper to the box, and also for the purpose of providing a smooth writing or addressing surface. y

The invention'further consists in details of construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter ,fully described and then claimed.

Fig. 6 is a perspective Vview of the box viewed from the opposite side to that shown in perspective view illustrating my mailing tube or The box is made in the usual manner, that is, from a single piece of pasteboard, or if desired, corrugated paperboard, and is constructed with a central portion l, side extensions 2, and lateral extensions 3; the said side and lateral extensions being scored, as at 4, to permit them to be readily bent and folded over the article to be transported. So far as described, the box does not differ from other receptacles now in common use, and I make no claim thereto per se, and do not wish to confine -myself to any special shape or dimensions thereof, either to the central portion l, or to the

Wires 6, are incased in envelops 9, preferably of paraffin paper, but which may be of ordinary paper or linen, the said envelops providing protecting channels for the tapes, cords, or Wires, to prevent the adv hesive material employed for securing' the paper 7 in position, from coming into contact with said envelops, thus permitting the tapes, cords, or Wires being freely drawn through the channels when tying or sealing the box. The arrangement thus described permits of the tapes being adjusted or drawn through the envelops or channels so that the ends of the tapes may be tied at a corner of the box, and afterward drawn around so that the knot will rest in the center of the package, as shown in Fig. 6, it being appreciated that a tape or cord may be much more conveniently tied `at a corner of a receptacle than upon a fiat surface. By this arrangement, it Will be seen that the paper cover 7 serves the double purpose of holding the envelops or channels firmly in position, and prevents the adhesive material of the paper cover 7 from coming into contact with the tapes, cords, or Wires, and, furthermore, that the said paper cover provides a smooth surface upon which an address may be Written With ink Without causing the ink to run and smear as when Written upon a porous surface.

I am aware that folding packages or boxes have been provided with fastening means or cords, but in these constructions, the packages have been perforated to permit the cords being run therethrough, but these constructions are expensive, and, furthermore, do not serve to protect the contents of the package, since the fastening cords are run inside of the package, and, hence,y When drawing the cords or tapes through such openings to facilitate tying the ends thereof, the friction of the cords or tapes ofttimes severs the Wrapper, and ofttimes injures the package or parcel in- It will be understood, that with my construction, the tapes, cords, or Wires are arranged entirely outside of the package, and, therefore, do not come into contact with the contents, and, hence, avoids any possible injury to the latter When being incased therein.

In a folding box from a single blank having Vside and Yend flaps scored and capable ofbeing folded as specified, fastening tapes or cords slidably carried by said blank, a paper cover adhesively connected to the back or body portion of said blank, and' envelops forjsaid tapes arranged under and held inplace by said paper covering providingchannels foi`- said tapes, whereby to permit the latter to be freely drawn therethrough, asspecified.`
