Köpük yeni olusturulmus köpük hücrelerinin üretiminden kalan köpürtücü madde kalintilarini içerir; üretimde birincil köpürtücü madde (bir veya birden fazla flüor içeren karbon terkibi ve istege bagli olarak karbon dioksit) ve ikincil köpürtücü madde (C1-4 alkol, C1-5 lineer veya siklik hidrokarbon, alkil halür, su veya bunlarin bir karisimindan olusan bir köpürtücü madde karisimi kullanilir.
