Det ildfaste materialet er korund (AI2O3) bundet med sialon (Si-Al-0-N). Foringsstrukturen gir beskyttelse mot det smeltede slagg og angripes ikke av den CO-rike smelteovnatmosfære. Videre vil féringen ikke kontaminere smelten og den tilveiebringer et effektivt varmedissiperingssystem i tilfelle av en energiavstengning.
