Abstract
354,866. High-tension switches. SIEMENS-SCHUCKERTWERKE AKT.- GES., Siemensstadt, Berlin. May 21, 1930, No. 15678. Convention date, July 16,1929. [Class 38 (v).] In an " expansion " switch as described in Specification 354,890, with a vapour chamber having an upwardly - directed conduit 3 for the movable switch pin 4, the diameter of the conduit is at least 4 mm. greater than the diameter of the switch line. In the construction shown, the hollow cylindrical contact 5 in the explosion chamber 1 which contains liquid (for example, water) communicates through the pipe 7 with an auxiliary air vessel 6 which relieves the pressure in the chamber 1. This vessel is furnished with a valve 8 held down by a spring 9. If small powers are being dealt with by the switch the pressure produced does not raise the valve. For high powers, when the pressure necessary to cause effective arc-extinction (on expansion) has been reached by the action of the arc drawn between the contacts 4, 5, the valve is opened and excess pressure relieved. Both chambers contain liquid and the flow between them passes over the arc-foot and assists to extinguish the arc. After the break, the liquid levels adjust themselves by means of the small passages 10, 11. Any loss is made up for by the inverted bottle device 12.
