Abstract
386,225. High - tension switches. SIEMENS-SCHUCKERTWERKE AKT.- GES., Siemensstadt, Berlin. June 15, 1932, No. 16925. Convention date, June 19, 1931. [Class 38 (v).] An "expansion" switch has a casing comprising an insulating upper part 21 and a metal lower part 11 having a contact chamber 12 cast integral with it. A series of flanged insulating rings 26 is threaded on rods 24, 25 between the casing 21 and a plate 15 having an extension 14 which has piston engagement with the chamber 12. When the contact rod 22 is withdrawn, a piston 28 moves upwards due to springs 30, 31 forcing liquid such as water, oil, carbon tetrachloride, &c. into the insulating column 26. When the contact 22 is withdrawn from the fixed contact 27, the arc vaporizes the liquid in the column 26 and the subsequent pressure moves the plate 15 against springs 18 and allows the vapour to escape between the rings 26. The sudden expansion extinguishes the arc. When the contact 22 is again inserted, the piston 28 is forced downwards and liquid passes through valves 32, 33 ready to fill the column for the next break, the liquid entering through valve 37 as the piston 28 rises.
