Abstract

PURPOSE:To increase the preservation performance of a battery by using graphitized carbon, which is prepard by subjecting a coke to a given treatment, as a conductive material for a positive mixture. CONSTITUTION:A positive mixture contains a conductive material made of graphitized carbon, which is prepared by subjecting a coke to heat treatment carried out in a nonoxidizing atmosphere. The former graphitized carbon is obtained by heating a coke up to near 3,000 deg.C in a nonoxidizing atmosphere. As the coke, petroleum coke, coal coke, pitch coke or the like is used. Since thus prepared graphitized carbon exibits enough flowability and lubricating property like natural flake graphite does when the positive mixture is subjected to dry molding, and any impurity such as Cu, Pb or Cd, which penetrates a separator and causes short circuit between a positive and a negative electrode, is not contained in the positive mixture, the preservation performance of a battery can be increased. It is preferable, especially, that the former graphitized carbon is used as a conductive material for a manganese dioxide which is used as an active material, is manufactured by electrolytic method and contains almost no impurities.
