Abstract
PURPOSE:To reduce in number the assembly steps of a battery and also to reduce water carried into the thus-assembled battery, by, when manganese dioxide is used as a positive electrode active material, compact-molding a positive electrode power mixture and subjecting it to a heat treatment at a predetermined temperature. CONSTITUTION:A positive electrode 1 is formed by molding under pressure a positive electrode powder mixture consisting of unheat-treated manganese dioxide, flaky graphite and polyfluoroethylene and then heat-treating it at 250-450 deg.C. By such a method, it is possible to remove not only any mingled water in manganese dioxide but also the binding water of manganese dioxide. Since the positive electrode powder mixture can be kept in a dry atmosphere similar to that employed during the assembly work of a battery after the heat treatment, the reattachment of water until the positive electrode mixture is assembled into a battery would be inhibited, thereby inhibiting the swelling of a battery or the reduction of its performance resulting from the occurrence of gas during the storage period of the battery.
