Abstract
PURPOSE:To provide a battery which is improved in discharge capacity and is interchangeable with general-purpose mercury batteries, by using as the positive active material a calcined mixture of iron sulfide and cupric oxide. CONSTITUTION:A compound obtained by calcining a mixture of iron sulfide and cupric oxide is used as the positive active material of a nonaqueous battery that employs a light metal such as lithium or sodium as the negative electrode. The active material is prepared by heating a mixture of 80g of iron sulfide and 90g of cupric oxide at 500 deg.C for 5hr under vacuum, followed by crushing. The resulting powder is then mixed with graphite and fluorocarbon resin powder, molded under pressure, and subjected to heat treatment under vacuum at 300 deg.C to make the positive electrode.
