Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a battery which has good shelfing properties by usng a negative electrode of lithium and a positive electrode made of a mixture of iodine monomer and an electron carrier complex consisting of iodine and an organic aromatic hetero- ring compound, and by specifying the diameter of the granules of iodine monomer contained in the positive electrode. CONSTITUTION:A battery is formed of a negative electrode 1 of lithium, a positive active material 2, and a solid electrolyte 3 whose main component is lithium iodide that will be formed on the active surface of the contact between the negative electrode 1 and the positve active material 2; the positive active material is made of a mixture of iodine monomer, which is in the form of a powder granule with a maximum diameter of not more than 77mum, and a charge transfer complex consisting of iodine and an organic aromatic hetero-ring compound. 1-Alkylpyridinium iodide is preferred as the organic aromatic hetero-ring compound, and a silicagel powder may be mixed with that. Through the means mentioned above, pitlike corrosions produced on the surface of the lithium negative-electrode in contact with iodine- monomer granules, can be uniformed, thus obtaining a battery without any deterioration in its discharge performance during storage, as well as any minute internal short-circuit.
