Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent any expansion of a nonaqueous battery which might be caused by gas generated in the battery during the preservation period of the battery, by using a positive active material which is prepared by adding a given amount of chromium sesquioxide to manganese dioxide before the mixture is subjected to heat treatment at a given temperature. CONSTITUTION:Manganese dioxide is admixed with 0.5-5.0mol% of chronium susquioxide, before the mixture is subjected to heat treatment at 300-450 deg.C to make a positive mixture. After that, the positive mixture is molded into a disclike shape, thus a positive electrode 5 for a manganese dioxide-lithium battery being obtained. As a result, any solid acid due to hydroxy groups which are generated on the surface of the former manganese dioxide can be neutralized and deactivated by the heat treatment of the above mixture. Consequently, the battery expansion which is caused by gas generation within the battery can be extremely minimized if the battery is preserved at 60 deg.C, and the increase in the internal resistance of the battery cab be reduced.
