Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain, at a low cost, a rubber composition, excellent in hardness, tensile stress, solvent resistance, etc., by admixture with charred rice hulls as a reinforcing filler.
CONSTITUTION: Rice hulls are charred and made electrically resisting by heat treatment in N2, at 250W400°C, and further heated at about 1,200°C, to give a product having an electrical conductivity near that of carbon black. The charred product obtained by the low-temperature heat treatment, can be easily pulverized by kneading. The rubber which has been mixed with such charred hulls in place of clay or calcium carbonate, together with ZnO2, carbon block, S and a rubber accelerator, and then vulcanized, is improved in hardness, tensile stress, etc., as compared with the rubber to which clay or calcium carbonate has been added, because the charred hulls mixed are easily pulverized by kneading and have large affinity for the rubber because of the high activity of their fresh surface produced.
