Abstract

PURPOSE:To reduce the expansion as well as the increase in the internal resistance of a battery that are caused during the preservation by mixing manganese and nickel monoxide in a given ratio, before the mixture is treated at a given temperature to obtain a positive active material for the battery. CONSTITUTION:Manganese dioxide, which is used as a positive active material for a nonaqueous battery such as an organic electrolyte battery, is added with 0.5- 6.0mol% of nickel monoxide having basic property that can inactivate the acid catalytic property of hydroxyl groups existing on the surface of the former manganses dioxide, before the mixture is subjected to heat treatment at 300-450 deg.C. Since solid acid due to hydroxyl groups existing on the surface of the former manganese dioxide can be neutralized and inactivated, the battery expansion caused by gas generation can be greatly reduced with the battery is preserved at a high temperature of 60 deg.C. Besides, the increase in the internal resistance, which is due to the decomposition of propylene carbonate and its products, can be maintained low.
