Abstract

PURPOSE:To increase the utilization ratio of the active material and enhance the preservation characteristics of a nonaqueous battery, by subjecting alpha-Mn2O3 to an acid treatment to obtain gamma-MnO2, before the thus obtained gamma-MnO2 is dehydrated by dielectric heating by means of microwave irradiation to be used for the positive electrode. CONSTITUTION:A positive electrode 5 made of manganese dioxide, a separator 7 and a liquid- holding material 8 are placed in a case 1. Next, a lithium negative-electrode 4, which is pressed against a sealing plate 2 with a grid interposed between them and is connected to the sealing plate 2, is placed on the liquid-holding material 8. At the same time, a gasket 9 is interposed between the case 1 and the sealing plate 2 to hermetically seal the battery, and the whole constitutes a nonaqueous-electrolyte battery. The manganese dioxide used for the positive electrode 5 of such a battery is prepared by treating alpha-Mn2O3 with an acid such as sulfuric acid or nitric acid to obtain gamma-MnO2, and dehydrating the thus obtained gamma-MnO2 by dielectric heating by means of microwave irradiation. A temperature of below 250 deg.C is preferred for the former dielectric heating. The concentration of the acid which is used for the former acid treatment is preferred to be below 10wt% with sulfuric acid, and below 30wt% with nitric acid.
