Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain expanded graphite with high work efficiency without forming a harmful matter by subjecting graphite to anodic oxidation and cathodic reduction in an electrolyte contg. a substance forming an interlaminar cpd. with graphite followed by heat treatment.
CONSTITUTION: Graphite is subjected to anodic oxidation in an electrolyte contg. 0.5W20mol/l of a substance which reacts with graphite to form a graphite interlaminar cpd., thus forming the cpd. The substance may be pref. sulfuric acid, nitric acid and phosphoric acid. Next, cathodic reduction is performed to decompose the cpd. The anodic oxidation and the cathodic reduction may be repeated. The resulting graphite is charged into a crucible heated to 850°C beforehand, and in the crucible it is heated and expanded.
