Abstract

PURPOSE: To stabilize etching and simplify as well as speed up repetition of the etching by a method whrein an anticorrosive metallic film layer is provided beforehand on a surface of a base and is engraved by an electronic engraving machine successively, thereafter, is etched.
CONSTITUTION: The anticorrosive metallic film layer 22 is formed on the surface of the press plate material provided with a base 12 on a cylinder (or a flat disc) 10 and is engraved by the electronic engraving machine to form a cell 14, having an area and a depth in accordance with a tone of an image in an original plate, so as to reach the base 12. Next, the base 12 is etched by utilizing the metallic film layer 22 remained thereon as a mask to form a cell 14" having a necessary cell volume, subsequently, the anticorrosive metallic film layer 22 is removed to make the gravure press plate (notation 18 designates a nonengraved portion).
